LYSOSOMES

By: Camille V. and Vaish T.

Lysosomes
Discovered by Christian de Duve
Lysosome is a membrane bound cell organelle found
in eukaryotic cells.
Phospholipid Bilayer Membrane with transport
proteins
Membrane prevents lysosome
from degrading important parts
of the cell.
Acidic environment of pH 4-5
Hydrolytic Enzyme Mixture

Function
Digestive system of the cell
Can contain 50 different hydrolytic enzymes to
degrade:
-Proteins, Nucleic Acids, Carbohydrates, and Lipids
Digests material brought into the lysosome by
Endocytosis, Phagocytosis, and Autophagy.

Process
Lysosomal enzymes are synthesized in the
endoplasmic reticulum
Enzymes transported to the trans-golgi.
Budded into vesicles.
Vesicle fuses with endosome,
phagosome or autophagosome to make
lysosome
