ROLE PROFILE

Job Title: Press Officer (science)

Responsible to: Manager of Science Press

Main Purpose of Job:

To exploit and create media and public interest and understanding


of the work and aims of Cancer Research UK.

Location: London

Key Responsibilities:

1. Research, plan, write and issue science releases and target them
at relevant media to deadline.
2. Organise logistics of press conferences including venue,
speakers and case histories (if necessary).
3. Anticipate media calls where possible and ensure spokespeople
are available to answer them or a relevant statement is
prepared.
4. Receive and respond to media enquiries quickly, providing
information and Cancer Research UK spokespeople.
5. Develop and maintain positive relationships with scientists,
health professionals and target journalists.
6. Build positive working relationships with other press officers in
the team.
7. Maintain the highest standards in all these activities.
Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Competencies:

Knowledge

1. Must have, or be working towards CAM certificate, NCTJ


proficiency, MSc in Science Communication or equivalent.
2. Strong communication skills ñ written and oral.
3. Knowledge of word processors/computer literate.

Experience

1. Extensive experience in a press office or as a journalist.

Skills and competencies

1. Excellent communicator.
2. Good problem solver.
3. Ability to work well under pressure.
4. IT literate; databases.
