The theme Racism and Judgment over Justice are similar because they both
bring up the problem of people assuming thing that arent always true. For example
when someone sees a bum in the streets they assume that they are a drop-out,
when sometimes they can be war vets and they cant get a job of their own. The
Theme of to Kill a Mockingbird is important for both TKAM and the Ferguson,
because each text shows the theme of Racism and Judgment over Justice.
TKAM is basically the childhood story of a little girl named Scout who lives
with her father, Atticus, her brother, Jem, and their black cook, Calpurnia, in
Maycomb, Alabama. Scout at a very young age witnesses many negative stuff that
occur in society like racism, poverty, murder and abuse. Atticus is a lawyer that
doesnt make much money mainly because his clients are poor and because he
defends people he believes dont deserve to go to jail. The theme is very important
because it shows how people judge someone by their appearance and how they
treat them. In TKAM during the court case of Tom Robinson he was proven innocent
but he was still thrown in jail because he was black big and strong. The evidence
provided during the case was that Mayella was a white girl and was in a room alone
with Tom Robinson so with that judge Taylor said What else is there to say Mayella
is defenseless against Tom. During the case Atticus said to Tom to stand up, his
powerful shoulder rippled under his thin shirt that is showing that by his
appearance he is an automatic threat to Mayella because of his broad shoulder and
his skin color. The similarity that TKAM and the Ferguson Case about Michael brown
share is that two black people were shot by two white people because of their
physical appearance.
In my current event a black kid named Michael brown was shot by a white
officer near a gas station because he assumed he was going to steal. My theme of
racism and judgment over justice relate to this because Michael was black and
instead of receiving a fair case he was shot on the spot. The quote The shooting
sparked unrest in Ferguson, in part due to the belief among many that Brown was
surrendering, as well as longstanding racial tensions between the majority-black
population and the majority-white city government and police. Shows that even though
Michael surrendered he was still shot. TKAM and my current event both show that
appearance plays a big role in society because they show how people react towards
each other.
This current event happened in August 9 2014 where racism is still a problem in
the world. Someone might say that those are just coincidences and that they cannot
relate to racism in any way. In my response racism in in fact a very big problem in the
world and I can prove it because in the article about Michael brown it says, The Michael
brown shooting can be linked towards racism because a black person was injustice shot
by a white cop. This essay shows that judgment over justice is very common along
with racism through out the world.
During this assignment I was asked to find a theme from TKAM and basically write an
assay explaining how it relates to a current event. This assignment was very informative
for me because it allowed me to research more about how racism works in this world. I
Think that my themes are well axplained on how racism and judgment over justice work
in this world.
