Help Make the World a Better Place

Loren Eiseley, famous educator, philosopher, natural science writer, and
anthropologist once said, Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go
to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he
began his work. One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the
beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the
thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch
up. As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that
what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the
shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean. He came closer
still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?
The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."
"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the
somewhat startled wise man.
To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't
throw them in, they'll die."
Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize
that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile?
You can't possibly make a difference!"
At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into
the ocean. As it met the water, he said,
"It made a difference for that one.

One of the first camps I went

to had 400,000 people. It was a
sea of human misery. In Sierra

with their arms and legs cut off,
orphaned children. I felt
completely overwhelmed. I
cried constantly. I felt guilty for
everything that I had. Then I
realized I wasn't doing these
people any favors by crying. I
kept getting angry at the
injustices until I couldn't think
straight. I took a deep breath
and focused on how I could
help. I discovered that I was
useful as a person. When I met
suffering people, it put my life

What Causes Starvation?

Poverty- Most people in the world are

very poor, thus they cannot buy food.
Discrimination- People are unable to get a
job or education based on their race,
gender, or ethnicity.
War- Armed conflicts can cause the
government to give most of its food to the
soldiers.
Environmental Overload- Many people in
poverty cannot feed themselves if other
nations consume more than they should.

World Starvation

How Many People are

Starving?
Did you know that about 1 billion people in the
world are starving? Also, hunger (or hungerrelated causes) kills 21,000 people in a day.
Hunger not only targets adults, but children too.
Each year, over 3.1 million children age 5 or
under, die from hunger and poverty. 1.2 billion
people are severely poor, having less than
$1.25, and many do not have a clean water
source near them. However, missionaries
around the world help these people receive
food, clean water, and vaccines.
