the paulk residence was constructed in 1994 by cutler architects for john
and elinor paulk in seaback, washington. the house sits on a 200 foot slope
overlooking the hood canal and mount olympus. the house is connected to
the ground at two points. one on the west end and again by a bridge in the
south. the bridge extends a full 180 feet through the house and helps to
the feeling of the outdoors into the house. the north facing facade is
almost entirely windows letting light and the dense forest flow through
the house.

Project 2: Visitor Center

The Intent of the second project was to create a visitor

center for the house studied during the case study. I
chose to create a visitor center that complimented the
original style of the paulk residence. I was interested in
the changing viewpoints of the area and how in different
locations, the house and the site around it could appear
differently. my design makes the visitor want to see more
as they travel through the house. it showcases views of
the paulk residence, the hood canal and mt. olympus.

the paulk residnce visitors center is loctaed

east of the origianl house. when entering
through the reception, the visitor can go
left into the library, which faces the house,
straight into the gallery, or right to the
steps which lead to the restroom, archives
and office. the library has an outdoor porch
at the end of it. the gallery is a narrow hallway that turns while also gently sloping down
with the grade of the ground. when reaching
the bottom of the ramp, the visitor enters
into an observatory that is flooded with light
and scenery of the woods, the hood canal
and mt olympus. when traveling throught the
gallery, there is a balcony that overlooks the
stairwell to the downstairs that allows for
additional natural light into the gallery while
also connceting it to the rest of the building.
the rooms are designed to increase in size the
further they are explored. that allows for a
greater view and for the feeling of entering
the space that they are showcasing.
