    R.K. Narayan was an Indian novelist born in 1906 in Chennai, India who is considered one of the best known Indian novelists writing in English. He was educated in Chennai and Mysore. Many of his novels, including his first two Swami and Friends and The Bachelor of Arts, were set in the fictional town of Malgudi. In 1958, his novel The Guide won India's highest literary honor, the National Prize of the Indian Literary Academy. In addition to novels, Narayan also wrote several short story collections, travel books, essays, and memoirs.

    R. K. Narayan is among the best known and most widely read Indian novelists writing in English.
    R.K. Narayan was born in Madras, South India, in 1906, and educated there and at Maharaja's College in Mysore. His
    first novel, Swami and Friends and its successor, The Bachelor of Arts, are both set in the enchanting fictional
    territory of Malgudi and are only two out of the twelve novels he based there. In 1958 Narayan's work The Guide won
    him the National Prize of the Indian Literary Academy, his country's highest literary honor.
