    areambiguousandaredifficulttopreciselyidentify.AccordingtotheWorldHealth
    Organization,suchcausescouldincludeasenvironmentalfactorsandalackofproperhygiene.
    TheNewYorkTimesstatesthatonesuchcausecouldbemisinformationandunawareness,
    citingtheongoingEbolaepidemicinWestAfricaasanexample.Varyingfromalackof
    knowledgetofearandrumors,medicalmisinformationiscausingproblemswithdisease
    controlthroughtheperpetuationofepidemicsglobally.

    SISisnoexception.Twodiseaseshaveaffectedthestudentpopulation,namelyinfluenzatypeA
    andNorovirus,alsoknownasthestomachflu.Itispossiblethatalackofawarenesson
    preventinginfectioncouldhaveledtothespreadofbothdiseases,which,accordingtoSchool
    NurseChoSoonJa,manystudentshavecaught.

    Thisisaseriousdiseaseandisconsideredtobeextremelycontagious,NurseChosaid.She
    addedthatsymptomsofbothdiseasesincludefevers,severevomiting,abdominalpain,and
    diarrhea.Thisinformationwasalsopartoftwolettersthatshesentouttoparents,detailing
    informationaboutthesymptomsofbothdiseasesandpossiblepreventionmeasures.

    DespitetheproperwarningssentouttostudentsandparentsbyNurseCho,therehavebeen
    possiblelackingsinpreventionandawarenessaboutthedisease.Accordingtoasurvey
    conductedontheSISstudentpopulation,53%ofstudentssurveyedhadknowledgeofNorovirus,
    50%hadknowledgeofinfluenzatypeA,and15%attemptedconsciouslyavoidinfection.

    Properhealthpreventionsmaybeapossiblemethodtopreventthesediseases.Anadditional
    surveyofSISstudentsshowedthatstudentswashedtheirhandsaround5timesadaybelowthe
    minimumstandardsetbytheGlobalHygieneCouncilof6times.

    NurseChorecommendedbasicpreventionmeasures,suchaswashinghandsonaregularbasis,
    avoidingclosecontactwithinfectedindividualsandobjects,andcheckingwithamedical
    professionalbeforereturningtoschool.

    Sucharebasicandarenotdifficultforstudentstodo,saidNurseCho.Contagiousdiseases
    haveclearpreventionmethods.Thingsthatyoucandotopreventdiseasesarereallybasic,like
    buyingamaskifyouhaveacold,washingyourhands,coveringyourmouthwithatissueor
    yoursleevewhenyousneeze.Itisimportanttodothesepreventionmeasuresonyourownto
    avoidcontagion.
