For question 9:
The penitent confesses his or her sins to the priest who should help the person to come to sincere
sorrow and repentance. Counsel is also offered to the penitent by the priest. An act of penance is given
by the priest, e.g. prayer, act of self-denial or a work of mercy to others. The penance should
correspond to the sins committed and help in changing sinful behaviours.
The penitent praises God's mercy and the priest bids him or her
to go in peace.
Both the priest and the penitent prepare for the sacrament by prayer. The penitent conducts an
examination of conscience and prays for God's forgiveness.

The penitent shows sorrow and the intention not to sin again. This is usually by means of a short
prayer of sorrow or contrition. The priest raises his hands, or at least his right hand, over the
penitent's head saying 'I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit' and makes the Sign of the Cross over the person.
A section from Scripture may be read by the priest or
the penitent.
The priest greets the penitent and welcomes him or her. The penitent makes the Sign of the Cross and
proceeds to tell the priest how long it is since his or her last confession along with any general
difficulties in trying to live a good Christian life.
