This document describes a simulation of a multivariable control system for the level and temperature of a chemical reactor. A phenomenological model was developed using mass and energy balances and equations to model the interactions between control loops. A decoupler was used to eliminate interactions between the PI and PID controllers for the level and temperature loops respectively. With the decoupler, the controllers only act on their intended outputs. The control system was tested by simulating setpoint changes and disturbances to the water exit, and the response curves for each controlled variable were analyzed.

MULTIVARIABLE CONTROL OF INDUSTRIAL PROCESS APPLIED TO CHEMICAL
REACTOR ABSTRACT This study shows the simulation, on a Matlab/Simulink environment, of a multivariable control system for the level and temperature of a chemical reactor; phenomenological (analytical) modeling was included, being developed and calculated from the process, involving techniques of mass and energy balance, equations linearization and the interaction among the control loops. By means of the decoupling theory, it was possible to eliminate the interactions among the control loops, commanded by PI controllers and PID ones. With the decoupler, the influence that the controllers have on the other loops is eliminated; it causes the controllers to act only at the exit for which they were projected. One PI controller for the control of level loops and one PID controller for temperature control were used; they were adjusted by means of the software Matlab/Simulink. This way, the characteristic curves of each variable controlled were projected, according to the disturbance created. It was caused either by the setpoint change or by the variation at the water exit from the rector. Key-words: multivariable control, Matlab/Simulink, level, temperature.
