A caterpillar of the cabbage white butterfly gets energy
from eating cabbage. Then a titmouse eats the caterpillar
of the cabbage white butterfly and a hawk eats the
titmouse. If animals only eat plants, they are called
herbivores. Carnivores, like wolves or some birds, only eat
meat. Omnivores eat plants and animals. Anything that
eats another plant or animal to get energy is called a
consumer.

All energy originally comes from

the sun. Cabbage cant hunt or
shop for food, so it simply uses
sunlight and water to make it.
Cabbage starts food chain. It is
called a producer.

The food chain ends with dead animals that

fungi and bacteria use as food. These
organisms break down the complex organic
compounds which then return to the soil so
that plants can use them again. Thats how
the food chain starts all over again.

Food chain

The food chain provides the energy

that all living things need in order to
survive. If one link in the chain
breaks, all organisms in chain are in
danger of extinction. Imagine the
world without bacteria! How would
plants survive?
