I chose to do my observation at the coffee shop where I usually do my

studying.
Exhibit One:
Description: Two people, one male, one female at a table sitting
across from each other. The male arrived about twenty minutes ahead
of the female.
Type of Cue: Oculesics. Small amounts of eye contact on the part of
the female.
Analysis: The male is making very direct eye contact while they
converse while the female is not meeting his gaze as much. It would
seem to me that theyre on a coffee date or blind date. It seems that
either the female is disinterested or distracted while the male is just
showing signs of attraction and interest.
Exhibit Two:
Description: A man ordering coffee. The counter person asks him a
question.
Type of Cue: Emblem. A thumbs up.
Analysis: The man gives a thumbs up as affirmation to the question
he was asked by the counter person. This is accepted in North America
and other places as a sign of affirmation but not universally.
Exhibit Three:
Description: A group of Adults sit around a large table. All of them
have a child with them. A child walking in and out of the group is
talking loudly.
Type of Cue: Illustrator. Holding up a hand to emphasize the word
stop.
Analysis: To add emphasis to a command to her child a mother holds
her hand up. This is more effective than a verbal cue alone.
Exhibit Four:
Description: A couple is drinking their coffee while sitting next to
each other.

Type of Cue: Haptic, Proxemics

Analysis: The couple is leaning on each other in their booth as they
drink their coffee and talk. This is a sign of affection.
Exhibit Five:
Description: Another group of younger adults sits around a table
having a conversation.
Type of Cue: Facial Expression, Illustrators.
Analysis: The group as a whole is nodding and smiling. Indicating
they are friendly and they agree with whatever they are talking about.
