Biology lab report 1

Temperature as a
factor that affects
the rate of
diffusion

Introduction:
Diffusion is the passive net movement of particles from region of high
concentratin to the region of lower concentration. There are certain factors that
can affect diffusion for example concentration, temperature, different tissue
types, molecular mass, permeability and surface area to volume ratio. There are
two types of diffusion: simple diffusion and faciliated diffusion.

Research question:
How does the change of the temperature affect rate of diffusion which needs to
occur in a sugar cube for a certain time?

Hypothesis:
As the temperature increases, the amount of energy available for diffusion is
increased. This means that a given particle will move faster at a higher
temperature because there is more energy available to push them. Thus in our
case the rate of diffusion of the sugarcubes will be faster as the temperature of
the water in the beakers increases.

Variables:
Independent: The temparature of the water (0C, 17C, 22C, 40C,
60C, 100C)
Dependent: Time (s)
Controlled: Shape of the cube, surface area, amount of water, type of
sugar
Control of variables: While doing this experiment we used thermometer
to measure temperature of water which was in the beakers and we were
heating it to the certain temperatures. We measured time with stopwatch.
In all tests same amount of water was measured with measuring cylinder.
Same shape and type of the sugar cube was used in all tests.

Apparatus and materials:

- Bunsen burner

- Wire gauze
- Apron
- Thermometer with error 0.5
- Measuring cylinder with error 2
- Gloves
- Stopwatch with error 0.1
- sugar cube
- ice cubes
-150 ml of water

Safety rules:
To avoid getting burned or injured we will follow some safety rules ,so we will
wear aprons and gloves not be in touch with materials or chemicals used in the
experiment.

Method:
We followed all safety rules while doing the experiment. First we took and
measured amount of 150 ml of water. Then we put it into the beakers. After that
we took one sugar cube and put it into the beaker.
