"I Have A Dream" Speech Analysis

Step #1 First Reading:


1. Annotate the text as you read. Be sure to look up the definition of words you do not
know, make comments in the margins, highlight, underline, etc. Engage with the text!
2. List three things that MLK said that you think are important. Cite evidence in the
document to support your point.
3. Why do you think this document was written? What evidence in the document helps
you know why it was written? Cite evidence from the document.
4. What is your favorite line or phrase in the speech? Why?
5. Write a question to the author that is unanswered by the document.
Step #2 First Listening:
1) What is the tone or mood of the speech?
2) Does this speech have a greater or lesser effect on you in its spoken form than in its
written form? Explain.
3) How did MLK use his voice to add to the effect of his words? Consider pitch, volume,
pace, and pauses.
Step #3 Deeper Group Analysis:
1.) Find examples in MLKs speech of these techniques for enhancing the effect of a
speech:
1 a) Rhetorical devices used: repetition, allusion, alliteration, metaphor, etc.
2 b) References or allusions to American history and/or important documents
3 c) References or allusions to biblical or religious ideas

5 Annotate the text and explain how MLK is using each technique.

As a group discuss the following questions: To whom was this speech addressed?
What appeals are made to each group?Cite evidence in the text to support your
opinion.
2. Compare the handwritten changes with the original typed draft. Select three changes
from this draft of the speech and explain how you think the changes strengthened or
weakened the address, considering the audiences they have identified.
