    The Government of Yukon has announced a new vision for education that will comprehensively review the education system to determine what is working and not working to improve it. As part of this new vision, the Department of Education will focus on competency-based learning, addressing challenges for First Nations and rural students, incorporating local and Indigenous perspectives, and providing flexible pathways for student success.     As!many!of!you!may!have!already!heard,!on!Thursday,!April!2!during!the!2015>2016!
    Budget!Address,!the!Government!of!Yukon!announced!that!over!the!coming!months,!
    we!will!be!rolling!out!a!new!vision!for!education!in!Yukon.!This!will!include!taking!a!
    comprehensive!look!at!Yukons!education!system!in!an!effort!to!assess!whats!
    working,!whats!not!working,!and!how!we!can!make!it!better.!!A!key!focus!of!the!
    speech!was!recognizing!that!education!is!a!team!effort!where!parents,!educators,!
    communities,!our!partners!and!all!other!stakeholders!have!to!come!together!to!guide!
    each!child!towards!adulthood.!!!!
    !!
    To!achieve!the!new!vision!for!education,!the!department!will!be!moving!forward!on!a!
    number!of!initiatives!including:!!
    Work!already!begun!in!regard!to!our!curriculum!redesign!including!a!continued!
    focus!on!competency>based!learning,!literacy,!numeracy,!and!authentic!
    or!meaningful!learning!opportunities!for!all!Yukon!students;!!!
    A!continued!focus!to!address!challenges!faced!by!our!First!Nation!and!rural!
    students;!
    An!increased!focus!on!locally!developed!learning!opportunities!and!department!
    authorized!programming!such!that!our!curriculum!reflects!Yukon/northern!
    and!First!Nation!perspectives;!
    Providing!opportunities!for!flexible!pathways!to!success!so!that!our!students!can!
    follow!their!aspirations!whether!they!are!post>secondary,!apprenticeships,!
    entrepreneurial!opportunities!or!experience!in!the!Yukon!workforce;!and!
    Continue!to!work!with!the!BC!Ministry!to!explore!our!partnership!and!
    opportunities!to!enhance!Yukon!curricular!objectives.!!
    As!you!can!appreciate,!achieving!a!new!vision!for!education!will!be!a!multi>year!
    project;!however,!Yukon!Education!is!well!positioned!to!meet!these!goals!thanks!to!
    the!hard!work!of!all!of!you.!!Together,!we!have!established!a!strong!understanding!of!
    the!redesign!of!BCs!curriculum.!!We!are!participating!on!BC!Ministry!curriculum!
    teams!and!we!continue!to!develop!our!own!programs,!resources,!and!experiential!
    models.!!We!are!deepening!our!understanding!and!collaborating!to!address!the!
    literacy!and!numeracy!needs!of!Yukon!students.!!We!are!working!together!to!provide!
    equity!of!learning!opportunities!to!rural!students!and!we!are!working!with!our!First!
    Nation!partners!to!establish!an!inclusive!educational!system!that!meets!the!future!
    needs!of!First!Nation!students.!!
