Analyze in detail how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced, illustrated, and elaborated in a text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.6.10
By the end of the year, read and comprehend literary nonfiction in the grades 6-8 text complexity band
proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.

Objective: Analyze text dependent statements and compare the quotes provided in
order to identify the quote that best supports each statement.

Materials: worksheet, scissors, glue, construction paper, article.


Timeline:
Class time: 1 hour
5 minutes introduce students to daily objective and explain importance.
2 minutes provide students with materials needed.
10 minutes students will read the article independently.
10 minutes Mini-lesson (Direct instruction and guided practice) teacher models to
students how to work on this activity by using 3 different statements and 5 quotes; read
all the statements, read all the quotes. Eliminate quotes that are irrelevant for the first
statement provided and once theres only two choices left, return to text to review the
connection between the quotes left and the statement we are working on.
30 minutes Independent practice Students work independently to demonstrate their
ability to analyze how provided evidence connects with text dependent statements.
3 minutes closure Give students 1 minutes to turn and talk and discuss what we did and
why we did it. Ask for a volunteer to tell the class the importance of what we did today.
Correct if needed then collect student work.

Activity: Students will be given a sheet of paper that is divided into 2 columns. 1
column provides students with 7 text dependent statements. The second column
provides students with 9 quotes. Student will read all of the quotes and statements
provided. Then, analyze which quote better supports each one of the statements. Once
students have matched the quotes to the correct statement. They will cut them and
paste them side by side in the construction paper provided.

Assessment: amount of correctly connected quotes to statements.
