Last!Sunday!St!Albans!School!student!leaders!
attended!The!Scottish!Society!of!New!Zealand!
Commemoration!of!World!War!1!at!10.30am.!I!was!
so!impressed!by!the!student!leaders!who!were!in!
attendance!and!would!also!like!to!acknowledge!the!
parents!who!were!able!to!support!this!community!
event.!

DigiAwards 2015
Earlier this term, I was fortunate enough to be selected to represent St Albans School on the
Childrens Board for the development of the Christchurch DigiAwards 2015. What does this
mean you may ask? Well, I along with 11 other children from schools around Christchurch
met with Suzi and Nina from Core Education to develop the structure of the 2015
DigiAwards. This included:

Logo design

Categories for the DigiAwards

Website design and development

Promotional strategies
First we had a short morning tea, with milo, cookies and lollies, while we got to know each
other. Then we had a discussion about what the DigiAwards is about. Next we brainstormed
over 100 different potential categories on sticky notes - in just five minutes! Later on we were
taken on a tour of the building to observe Core Educations IT people in action as many of the
children were interested in careers in IT. Finally we split up into small teams (I was by
myself!) and made PowerPoints or Google Docs about our idea for the DigiAwards theme.

My idea was happiness and laughter. Then we presented them to all the groups and did a
blind vote. The winning idea was Heroes.
Overall I had a really great time working with other children to explore our creativity, work
collaboratively and utilise our IT skills. I look forward to being involved in the DigiAwards
competition in September with other St Albans students.

SCHOOL!NOTICES!
School!Safety!
On!Wednesday!I!had!the!School!Safety!team!and!the!School!Councilors!on!the!footpath!
to!encourage!children!to!walk!the!loop.!The!reason!we!do!this!is!purely!for!the!safety!of!
our!students.!Sheppard!Place!is!excessively!busy!in!the!mornings!and!afternoons!and!it!is!
only!a!matter!of!time!before!someone!is!seriously!hurt!or!worse.!!It!was!disappointing!to!
see!some!parents!taking!their!children!directly!across!the!road!even!after!being!asked!
politely!to!walk!the!loop.!This!does!not!install!a!sense!of!safety!or!common!sense!
whatsoever.!The!safety!team!and!helpers!will!be!out!on!patrol!again!on!Friday.!Let's!see!
if!we!can!get!all!students!who!come!from!the!Edgeware!side!of!Trafalgar!St!walking!the!
loop.!The!safety!team!will!also!be!giving!out!house!points!to!those!that!have!walked!the!
loop!to!school.!
!

Next!week!we!are!going!to!trial!a!drop!off!option!at!the!Westminster!Street!gate!that!
leads!to!school.!If!you!usually!park!in!this!area!and!are!just!dropping!your!child!off!and!
not!intending!to!come!into!school!then!we!will!have!senior!students!who!will!help.!Their!
job!will!be!to!open!your!car!door!on!the!footpath!side!and!take!your!child!into!school.!
The!idea!here!is!to!reduce!traffic!congestion!in!this!area!and!it!will!save!you!time.!If!you!
are!intending!to!come!into!school!then!we!encourage!you!to!park!in!the!nearby!streets.!If!
it!is!successful!we!may!trial!this!in!Sheppard!Place.!!Remember!this!slogan!for!your!childs!

Arts!Term!Reminder!E!Te!Waipounamu!
Last!week!we!asked!for!expressions!of!interest!from!children!who!would!like!to!be!
involved!in!being!in!a!special!group!to!represent!their!own!culture!at!the!Cultural!Festival!
in!Term!3.!!We!are!also!still!on!the!lookout!for!a!large!marquee!and!some!sheds!for!the!
