Huck Finn Synthesis Essay
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn should not be taken off public school
reading lists. Students should experience how slavery and racism was during the
1800s. The n-word appears more than 200 times in this book it may make people
uncomfortable but Twain is trying to influence us about how whites had total control
over African Americans and how they were treated. I think it is a good idea for
people to know about our history and keep classic books in the reading lists of
public schools.
I chose to keep Huckleberry Finn in the public school lists by simply reading
Light out, Huck, by Michiko Kakutani. Michiko describes how this novel helps
students and adults have a point of view from Americans history of racial
discrimination. For example, it quoted Helping students understand that
Huckleberry Finn actually stands as a powerful indictment of slavery using its
contested language as an opportunity to explore the painful complexities of race
relations in this country in this article it is very clear that this book is a good
influential of our past. Michiko Also quoted Nigger which appears more than 200
times was a common racial epithet in the antebellum south, is used by twain as a
part of his characters vernacular speech and as a reflection of mid-19 th century
social attitudes. This clearly shows how the n-word is a part of the social attitudes
in the 19th century which keeps the originality of our American culture in schools
still.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is not just to show how miss treated
slaves were and how the n-word is so offensive to some people but it is showing us

a piece of knowledge and mind. In Leave Twain Alone by Kathleen Parker she
explains how you should look deeper into the book than just the discrimination for
example it quoted The purpose of reading isnt just to run words past a pupils but
to enhance understand and reveal truth thought what we call teaching. In this
article it is much unbiased that Huckleberry Finn has good evidence and information
for all. Some people automatically judge Huck Finn as a racist book just because of
the n-word and the violent actions that occur in the book numerous times, those
people need to understand that there is more in the book than discrimination and
offence for example Kathleen quoted Some teachers and librarians find twain
offensive is regrettable but lets be clear these facts are an indictment of teachers
and librarians who should find another line of work, not proof that twain needs
fixin.
I can relate to readers that Twain offended people and that it is not very
inappropriate for school but the book has a great story to it. Everybody takes the nword to themselves differently, some take it seriously and others dont. Kristen
Gardners short article Untitled shows how the inappropriate language and events
that occurred that have been taken out is great, Kristen quoted I agree with
Kathleen Parker that Huckleberry Finn didnt need bowdlerizing, but I have to
admire that fellow who edited the new, cleaned-up edition. What genius!. Not
everyone thinks Twains work needs to be fixed but they do route on that the n-word
really catches their attention and is offensive Jimmy Swindler the writer of A good
fix for Huck Finn quotes I firmly believe that his use of on extremely offensive
word a word I noticed you didnt dare print is keeping one of his classics out of
hands of countless American schoolchildren this creates thoughts that offended

readers could ban the book from schools, but there is more than just cuss words
and disrespectful actions in Huck Finn that readers need to look into.
