AfewmonthsagoinBerlin,about30,000peoplewhorepresentlocalfarmers,
beekeepers,environmentalists,consumers,andmanymoreweredemonstratingagainst
conventionalagricultureagribusinesses.Theprotestersarguedthattheseconventionalagriculture
agribusinessesareharmfulfortheemploymentofsmalllocalfarmersandthattheyare
deleterioustothebiodiversityandtheenvironment.Insteadofthis,theprotestersdemandedthat
theygivehealthy,organic,environmentallysound,andcostefficientfoodforeveryone.They
alsowantedanendtomonocultureandGMOs.Thisprotestwaslargescaletheprotestors
marchedfromPotsdamerPlatztotheMinistryofAgriculture.Itwassuccessfulingainingthe
attentionofmanypeopleinGermanyinfact,theChancellorAngelaMerkelandthe
ViceChancellorSigmarGabel.ThismarchwasabletocausesomechangesinGermany:people
switchedfromconventionallygrownfoodstoorganicfoodsandthegovernmentmadeaneffort
tousemoresustainablepractices.Marchesliketheonesmentionedhereoccureveryyearin
severallocations
Marcheslikethisoccureveryyearinseverallocations,andareveryhelpfulinstriking
againstconventionalagriculture.Aprominentcompanythathasgarneredalotofnegative
attentioninManastoManastocreatesGMOsandvariousotherthings,whichareessentialin
conventionalagriculture.ProtestsinJapan,Brazil,America,andUKhelpedgainawareness.
Theprotestsareconductedbyinvitingpeopleallaroundtheviabyusingsocialmedia,andthe
participantswearantiGMOtshirts,holdupantiManastosign,andcompareManastotodeath.
TakingdownbigcompanieslikeManastowoulddeeplyconventionalagriculture.However,
Manastohasconnectionsinalloverthegovernmentandhighlyrankedofficials.

Protestersusedstrongandemotionalvisualstogarnersupport,andstrengthentheirstance
againstconventionalagriculture.Theyusedimagesofsmallchildren,infertileland,anddeath.
Overall,protestshavebeensuccessfulinbringingchangeinsomeareasaroundtheworldsuchas
Germany,India,Austria,andFrance.

Apopularformofsilentprotestistheuseofphotography.Photographscancapturea
powerfulmessageortruthfromasubjecttheythemselvesareaformofart.Photographstaken
byAnnieLeibovitz,DorotheaLange,andAnselAdamscapturetheverytruththatphotographs,
likeart,canappealtotheaudiencesemotionalstate.Oneparticularphotographer,Mishka
Henner,tookaphotographsofasatelliteviewofAmericanfeedlotsthatshowindustrialbeef
farming.ThesephotographstellastoryaboutthechangethatoccurredtotheAmericans
landscape.Itshowsaprogressionfromagreenandfertilelandscapetoandesertlikeindustrial
landscape.Thesephotographsareappalingbecauseitdepictsareallandscapeandtheeffect
conventionalagricultureishasontheenvironment.Thephotographercleverlyutilizesa
helicopterwithacameratotakethisimage.Since,thisisasatelliteimage,thereisnotmuchshe
couldhavedonetomanipulatethesetting.Theaudienceofthispiecewaseveryonebecause
Hennerwantedeveryonetowitnessthechangethatoccurredtotheenvironment.This
photographisatypeofprotestbecausetheartistwaspointingouthisdistastewiththechangein
theagriculturebusiness.ItissimilartothevideoscreatedbyChipotlebecausetheybothpoint
outtheterriblechangethatoccurswiththeutilizationofmachinery,antibiotics,andpesticides.
However,itisdifferentfromtheothertypesofprotestbecauseitchoosesaparticularexampleof
aplacewheretheenvironmentalchangeisoccurring,whereasintheothermodelstheywere
quitegeneral.Thespecificityhelpstheaudienceseeanexampleoftheeffectconventional
agriculturehasontheenvironment.Overall,thisphotographwasveryeffectiveingrabbingthe
attentionofmanypeopleandspreadingtheawarenessofthisissue.Thisisnottheonly
photographsthatdepictstheevilsofconventionalagriculture.ApicturetakenbyScottBauer

showstheilltreatmentthatanimalsfaceinthefactories.Suchphotographsaretakentonotify
thepeopleabouttheevilsthatthesecorporatefarmsaredoingtotheanimalsandthe
environment.Thephotographwaseffectivebecausethesettingitwastakeninwasdark,the
animalsconnectedemotionallywiththeaudience,andthethecolorsweresad.Therefore,theuse
oflighting,colors,andmessagehelpsmakeapowerfulphotograph.

Recently,Chipotlehasbeenairingadsthataretoutingsustainableagricultureand
deridingconventionalagriculture.Theseadvertisements/videoseffectivelyshowtheprocessof
conventionalagricultureanditsnegativeimpactsontheenvironment.Chipotleisknownforits
considerableeffortstoincorporateorganicfoodswithinitsfoodthesevideosfurthertheircause
forcleanandsustainableagriculture.InthevideoBacktotheStart,itbeginswithagreen
environmentandfreeanimals.Asthevideoprogresses,itdepictsatransitionfromclean
sustainableagriculturetoconventionalagriculture.Itdepictstheusageofmachines,antibiotics,
andetc.toharnesstheanimalsandmakeaprofit.Italsoshowsthedamageithasonthe
environment.But,thevideocleverlyusesthistosetthestageforanalternatereality.Itshowsa
changefromtheconventionalagriculturetosustainableagriculture,andthebenefitsthataccrue
fromthechange.Notonlyisthevideocleverlydefilingconventionalagriculture,italsoimplants
theideaintheaudiencethatChipotleisahealthyplacetoeat.Thevideosanimationandmusic
contributedtothemessage.Whenthefarmerwasswitchingtoconventionalagriculture,the
settingbecamegraduallydarkerandthemusicbecameslowandsad.However,whenthefarmer
switchedbacktosustainableagriculture,thesettingbecamebrightandthemusicbecame
uplifting.Subliminally,thiscausestheaudiencetoembracethismessageanddisapprove
conventionalagriculture.BacktotheStartwasnottheonlyvideoChipotlemadetocombat
ConAgri.TheirvideoTheScarecrowwasverypowerfulandintrospective.Itmakespeople
questionthecurrenttrendinanimaltreatment.Itbeginswithascarecrowthatworksinafactory
calledCrowFoods,andthescarecrowseestheinjusticethatanimalsface.Inthevideo,it
depictstheuseofantibioticsinanimalsandtheinhumanetreatmentofanimals.Likethe

previousvideo,thisvideoshowsachangeinwhichthescarecrowsswitchestogrowingorganic
foods.Theunderlyingideainthisvideoissymbolic.Thescarecrowrepresentstheideathatit
canscareofftheCrowFoodsbyswitchingtoconventionalagriculture.Bothofthesevideos
sharemanysimilaritiessuchasthemusicThemusicinthisvideobeginsslowanddepressing
however,whenthescarecrowshiftstosustainableagriculturethemusicbecomesuplifting.
Therefore,theusageofmusic,symbolism,andanimationcanhelpcreatearivetingandpowerful
video.
