LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 2013-2015

SEMINAR REFLECTIVE SUMMARY

SEMINAR TOPIC: Historical Perspectives/DIET and CCIT
PARTICIPANTs NAME: Jo Ann Baker
1. What were the significant learning points for you in this seminar?
This seminar provided the why and how our College became a
reality and how DIET and CCIT were established. Dr. Patricia
DePlasco shared the historical overview of the inception of the
community college dating back to 1901. She provided the
foundation of why there was a need and the evolution of its role.
This presentation also provided the historic perspective of
Delaware Technical Community College, established through
legislation in 1966. The time lines for each Campus were
provided.
For me personally, I attended the Georgetown Campus as a
student nurse from Milford Memorial Hospital in 1973-1974. Our
school transported us to the campus for our class to complete
the required general education courses. This was a significant
advantage for me when I returned to pursue my Bachelors in
Nursing, as I had received college credits that transferred.
Dr. Richard Kralevich provided the historical overview regarding
technology at Delaware Tech and the mission and goals of the
Department. He discussed the planning phases for upgrades
using the one, three, and five year planning stages. The
presentation also included Craig Cox, who provided information
related to identify theft and how to avoid the potential pitfalls of
becoming a victim of it. He shared info related to phishing and
spams.
2. In what ways is each learning point supportive of or relevant to
your ideas about leadership?
Community members/educators identified a need for a
community college and legislators supported the establishment
Delaware Technical & Community College. This supports my
ideas of leadership as it transforms a vision into reality, based on
information supporting a need.
A department that continues to strive to attain the most up to
date resources for the employees guides the information
technology at Delaware Tech. The department provides

education and support to assist employees use technology in

safe environments.
3. Identify a way to apply each of these learning points to your
current role at the College.
Clear articulation of a vision with supporting information creates
an opportunity to explore new ideas. Involving persons of
interest within the institution as well as outside provides input
and support for potential establishments of projects, programs
and changes. Utilize resources available to assist with
technology and maintain safe use.
