What were the significant learning points for you in this seminar? The Vice Presidents/Campus Directors from the three Campuses provided an overview of their career journey to their current role. Two of the three have nursing backgrounds. Every one of them articulated a passion for teaching and student success. The main points related to the position of VP/Campus Director included, decision making; making the operation of the Campus come together, and be able to not just conceptualize, but take concept to reality. For campus operations to work well the positions have to be accountable to public (trust), maintain and be worthy. Other dimensions of the job include, hiring, making final decision on candidate selection, disciplinary actions, conflict resolution, personnel matters, and legal action. Also noted is that fund raising is a part of the role responsibility, as state support is less than half to run College. It is important to develop relationships, noting that each county is different and each has a campus, so the public relations component needs to know the job and market needs of the areas. The role of the VP/Campus Director must balance the role of manager and leader and must be a manager to be a leader seamlessly, to manage time, schedule, and resources. 2. In what ways is each learning point supportive of or relevant to your ideas about leadership? I am passionate about quality education and outcomes, student retention and success. I promote this constantly within and outside my department. The learning points that support and are relevant to my ideas of leadership is the ability to manage and lead, developing a trust with faculty, staff, students, and the public, and maintaining high quality education outcomes. Also,
knowing the community needs of the department and resources
for potential partnership opportunities. 3. Identify a way to apply each of these learning points to your current role at the College. These learning points can be applied in my current role by continuing to work within the College guidelines, working within my job role, and utilizing my resources.
