LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 2013-2015

SEMINAR REFLECTIVE SUMMARY

SEMINAR TOPIC: Governance and Decision Making
Dr. Kathy Janvier, VP & Campus Director, Stanton/George
Campus
Dr. Ileana Smith, VP & Campus Director, Owens Campus
Dr. June Turansky, VP & Campus Director, Terry Campus
PARTICIPANTs NAME: Jo Ann Baker
1. What were the significant learning points for you in this seminar?
The Vice Presidents/Campus Directors from the three Campuses
provided an overview of their career journey to their current role.
Two of the three have nursing backgrounds. Every one of them
articulated a passion for teaching and student success.
The main points related to the position of VP/Campus Director
included, decision making; making the operation of the Campus
come together, and be able to not just conceptualize, but take
concept to reality. For campus operations to work well the
positions have to be accountable to public (trust), maintain and
be worthy. Other dimensions of the job include, hiring, making
final decision on candidate selection, disciplinary actions, conflict
resolution, personnel matters, and legal action. Also noted is
that fund raising is a part of the role responsibility, as state
support is less than half to run College. It is important to
develop relationships, noting that each county is different and
each has a campus, so the public relations component needs to
know the job and market needs of the areas.
The role of the VP/Campus Director must balance the role of
manager and leader and must be a manager to be a leader
seamlessly, to manage time, schedule, and resources.
2. In what ways is each learning point supportive of or relevant to
your ideas about leadership?
I am passionate about quality education and outcomes, student
retention and success. I promote this constantly within and
outside my department. The learning points that support and
are relevant to my ideas of leadership is the ability to manage
and lead, developing a trust with faculty, staff, students, and the
public, and maintaining high quality education outcomes. Also,

knowing the community needs of the department and resources

for potential partnership opportunities.
3. Identify a way to apply each of these learning points to your
current role at the College.
These learning points can be applied in my current role by
continuing to work within the College guidelines, working within
my job role, and utilizing my resources.
