Highlights of the source article (242 words)
The Religious Studies Center [rsc.byu.edu] (RSC) was started by (Elder) Dean Jeffrey
Holland, Dean of Brigham Young University at the time, in 1975 because he felt he needed to
help the productivity and cohesion of the Rreligious eEducation publishing efforts at the
university. Religious education at that time was a variety of study and research groups, including
the Richard L. Evans Chair of Religious Understanding. Dean Elder Holland determined that the
college university needed a place to publish their its own findings and to get them outmake them
available to the general public. With this in mind, he decided to create the Religious Studies
Center.
Today, the RSC publishes articles, research papers, books, and other scholarly works from the
some of the foremost Latter-day Saint scholars around, including the First Presidency and the
Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as well as BYU doctors like Robert Millet and Brent Top. The
RSC also sponsors major conferences and symposia based around on religious learning and
academia.
When the RSC was first created, Dean Elder Holland wanted to place a special emphasis on
student involvement. To that end, the RSC hired students to help with the editing and publishing
of the works; it also and started a student journal, Studia Antiqua, for student academic works.
The RSC publishes materials not only in print but also online on its website [rsc.byu.edu]. The
website works as a host to materials and books that the Religious Studies Center publishes in
addition to a scholarly blog. The blog is attended to by respected scholars such as Robert Millet
and Devan Jensen and covers topics such as the Dead Sea Scrolls and a Look into Moral Agency.
