FromtheWashingtonMonumenttotheLincolnMemorial,almosteverymonumentin
thecapitaloftheUnitedStatesinspiressomesenseofawe.Thosemonuments,however,were
noteasytobuildalotofplanninghadtogointotheircreation.Whenplanningonbuildinga
monument,thebuildershavetomakesurethatitisnotinvasiveoroffensivetothepeoplethatit
isdedicatedto,thattheyhaveenoughmoneytobothconstructandmaintainit,andthatit
inspiresaweandappreciationinthosewhoseeit.
Themostimportantconsiderationwhenbuildingamonumentismakingsurethatitis
neitheroffensivenorinvasive.Forexample,theseconsiderationswerenottakenintoaccountby
thebuildersoftheCrazyHorsemonumentinSouthDakota,whichisbothoffensiveinthatitisa
fictionallikenessofCrazyHorse,sincenobodyknewwhathelookedlike,anditwasinvasivein
thattheAmericanstookthislandawayfromtheIndianstomakethemonumenton.Another
exampleofamonumentbeingoffensiveistheproposedHolocaustmuseuminTheMallof
AmericainWashington,D.C.,becausetheU.S.A.didalmostnothingtohelpHolocaust
survivorsafterWorldWarII,yettheyaremakingthemamonumentnow.Ifamonumentis
eitheroffensiveorintrusive,itwillnotbegloriousandaweinspiringasmonumentsaremeantto
be.

Finally,monumentsneedtobemadetoinspireaweandappreciationinthosewhoseeit.
Evenifthemonumentisnotbuiltonahistoricalsite,itcarriesoutitspurposeaslongasit
inspiressuchemotionsinthosewhoseeit,suchasthoseinspiredbytheepicstatueinsourceB.
