SimilarTriangles

Problem:
Withfourrodsalreadygiven(6,4,3,and2incheslong)youhavetocreateasmanypairs
ofsimilartrianglesasyoucanwithaddingrodsbetweenthemeasurementsof1and20inches
long.Howmanysimilartrianglescanyoumakeusingallfouroriginalrodsandanyothertwo
rodsbetweentheintegers1to20?

Process:
Whiletryingtounderstandtheoriginalproblemthefirstapproachthatwetookwas
thinkingaboutwheretoputthefourrodsbetweenthetwotriangles,sothattheywouldstay
similar.Westarteddrawing2triangleswithonlyhavingthe4givesidestomakethemsimilar.
Wethenaddedanothersidetwobothtrianglesthatweresimilartoeachotherinthewaysthatthe
othersidesweresimilar.Onekeyinsightorimportantunderstandingwehadonhowtosolve
theproblemwasknowingthatthetriangleshadtohaveanequationofA+B>Cmeaningthe
twoshortersidesaddedtogetherhadtobegreaterthanthelongestside.Anirritationthatwe
foundwhileworkingonthisproblemisthatthetrianglescouldnotbesimilarbyadditionor
subtraction.Althoughthetriangleslookedsimilarandtheanswerslinedupbyadditionor
subtractiontheywerenottrulysimilartriangles.Howwebegantoorganizeourinformationwas
bykeepingallofthepaperswithtrianglespairsthatworkedanddidntworkinourbindersso
thateverytimeweworkedonfindingasolutionwecouldseethetrianglepairsandequations
thatwealreadytriedthatdidanddidntwork.Thesimilarityintrianglesiswhentwotriangles
appeartobethesameshapejustdifferentsizes.Tobesimilartheyhavetoshareallthesame
anglesbutcandifferinsizeofthetriangleasawhole.Weknewthatthepairsoftriangleswe
madeweresimilarbecausetheykeptthesameshapeandanglesastheygreworshrankinsize.

Solution:
Onepairofsimilartrianglesthatwefoundwas8,6,4and4,3,2.Thesetrianglesare
similarbecausethetrianglesarestayingsimilarwiththesamemeasureofanglesasthetriangle
isdecreasinginsizebythesidesbeingdividedby2.Theamountofsimilartrianglesthatyoucan
possiblymakeis6.

AdditionalProblems:

Oneadditionalproblemthatcouldbemaderelatedtothisproblemishavingamore
limitedsizevarietyoftheextrarodssothattherewouldbelessrodsthatvaryinlength.Another
extendedproblemwouldbeonlyhaving3measurementstouseandanalreadygivenequation
thathastobeusedtofindthesimilartriangle.Thelastextendedproblemcouldbefinding3
groupsofsimilartriangleswith4alreadygivensidesinsteadofonlyfinding2.

Evaluation:
Ourfirstreactiontotheproblemwasthatitseemedeasy.Afterworkingonitforawhile
wediscoveredthatitwasalittlemorechallengingthanwethoughtconsideringthatwehadto
comeupwithasmanypairsaswecouldthatweresimilarineveryway.ThisPOWwas
somewhateducationalbutatthesametimeitwasalotofonlycomparingsidesandfinding
similaritieswhileusingeducationalequationsandnumbers.ThisPOWhelpedtoteachusabout
howtrianglescanbesimilarandhowtomakeorknowiftwotrianglesaresimilar.Onewaythat
thisproblemcouldbemadebetterisbymakingtheinstructionsmoreclearandbyaddingon
anotherprocesstobecarriedoutafterfindingtwosimilartriangles.ThisPOWwassomewhat
enjoyablebutwefeltthatitwasfrustratingalthoughthisPOWwasnottoochallengingortoo
easy.Scoringourworkoutof25pointswethinkthatwedeservea24forourhardworkand
effortandoursolutiontotheproblem.
