A
Application Software: a computer program that allows users complete
tasks such as creating documents, etc.
The application software to use for creating a document is Microsoft Word
Examples: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel

Binary System: this is the number system a computer is based on. It
consists of only two number systems which is 0 and 1
We learnt that in binary system the only numbers you can use are 0 and 1.
Examples: 110100, 101

Cloud Computing: using a network of remote servers on the internet to
store data.
Cloud computing could sometimes be considered unreliable because a user
can be hacked.
Example: E-mail

Drive: a medium that stores and reads information and is not easily
removed.

Do not forget to fix in your drive when building your computer.


Examples: Hard drive, Removable drive

E-commerce: Electronic Commerce. Buying and selling of goods or services
with the use of computer network.
Before e-commerce was invented people used catalogs to shop.
Example: Internet Banking, Online Shopping, Electronic Payments.

File Management: organizing files and folders so itll be easy to locate.
We talked about file management and why it is important for our files to be
organized.
Example: folders, subfolders

Globalization: worldwide movement toward economic, financial, trade and
communication integration
The world is becoming more developed due to globalization.
Example: the internet.

Hard-drive: data storage device use for storing and retrieving digital
information.
A hard-drive is coated with magnetic metal.
Example:

Internet Service Provider: a company which provides access to the
internet
4G Swift Broadband is believed to be the best internet service provider in
Nigeria.
Examples: Xfinity, AT&T

Jailbreak: making unauthorized changes to an apple device to get apps
from other sources other than i-Tunes app store
It is illegal to jailbreak an iPhone.
Example:

Kilobyte: a unit of memory or data

A kilobyte equal to 1,024 bytes.


Example: 1KB, 700KB

Local Area Network: a computer network that connects devices within a
close range.
Local Area Network is capable of transmitting data fast with limited
distance
Example: home Wi-Fi

Malware: viruses, worms that a designed to disrupt a computers
operations.
One is at risk of downloading a malware when they download files from emails without a subject.
Example: Trojan horses

Network: group of two or more computer systems linked together.
A network connection can be wireless or wired.
Examples: LAN, WAN, MAN

Operating System Software: software program that enables the computer


to communicate and operate with the computer software.
My computer system is useless without the operating system software.
Examples: IOS, Windows, Mac OS, Android

Peripheral Devices: additional devices connected to a computer system to
add functionality
Peripheral devices do not contribute to the computers primary function.
Examples: Mouse, printer, scanner

QWERTY: the standard layout on English-language typewriters and
keyboards, having q, w, e, r, t, and y as the first keys from the left on the top
row of letters.
Most phones have QWERTY keyboard.
Example:

Router: a device used to send data packets between computer networks.

A router works together with a modem.


Example:

Spyware: program that allows a user obtain information about another
users computer activities by transmitting data covertly from their hard drive.
Spyware is a type of malware installed on the computer without the
knowledge of the owner.
Example: Trymedia

Technology: application of scientific knowledge for practical purpose.
Technology makes work easier and faster.
Examples: clock, cellphones, computers, etc.

Utility Software: System software designed to help maintain, analyze, and
configure a computer
I download at least a utility software on all my devices to help me maintain
them and scan for virus.
Examples: Norton Anti-virus, 360 security.

Virus: program designed to disrupt a computers operation.
My computer can get a virus if I download files from untrusted sites.
Example: Exploit-Byte Verify

Website: collection of web pages accessed via the internet
Wix is a free website builder.
Example: word press.
X
XHTML: short for Extensible Hypertext Mark-up Language.
XHTML is a hybrid between HTML and XML.
Example:

Y
YouTube: video clip sharing website
YouTube requires internet connection.
Z

Zombie: a computer that has been compromised by a malware that allows it


to be controlled by a remote user.
A zombie computer can also be called a bot.
Example: drone
