1. Howdoyouthinkstudentslearnmathematics?
Inmyownexperience,studentslearnedandretainedmathematicsmoreviatheuseof
discoverytaskbasedlearningandopenendedquestioning.Forexample,insteadofdefining
whatanextraneoussolutionisinarationalequation,whynotallowstudentstosolveforthe
solutionviasimplification,thendiscoverwhathappenswiththesimplifiedsolutionviaagraph
orinputtingthesimplifiedsolutionintotheoriginalequation.Attheendofthelesson,the
studentwillthenbeasked,Whatisanextraneoussolution,andwhydoesitoccurinarational
function?Thisfoundsabetterunderstandingoftheconcept,asstudentsareforcedtodiscover
andcomeupwithideasontheirown.Ihavefoundinmyownexperience,thistypeoflearning
ensuresunderstandingandlongtermcomprehensionofanobjectiveorconcept.
Inanutshell,allstudentsthinkandlearndifferently.Youhavetointroducedifferentwaysto
solveaconceptandallowstudentstodeveloptheirownthoughtsandbrainpatternstogetthere.

2. Howdoyouthinkyoushouldteachmathematics?
Well,thisisaloadedquestion!Ithinkthekeytoeffectiveteachingofmathematicsistofirst
understandhowthestudentsintheclassroomarethinkingandclearlyunderstandtheir
perspective.Youneedtounderstandtheskillsyourstudentsalreadyhaveandhowtheyalready
thinktoplaneffectiveuseoftasksandlessons.Fromthere,yousetobjectiveandgoalsbasedon

curriculumstandardsandyourownpersonalstandards(knowingwherestudentshavecomefrom
indevelopmentandwheretheyneedtoprogresstointheirlearningplans).
Afteryouhaveplannedyourobjective,thatswhereyourresearchandlessonplanning
begins.Youstarttofindthemosteffectivewaystoteachanobjectiveutilizingtoolandideas
thatalreadyexist(andbuildingyourown).Byunderstandingthemindsetofyourstudentsand
theobjective,youcaneffectivelyteachmathematicstostudents.Inmyownexperience
emphasisondiscovery,questioning,andutilizingtaskstoincreasecognitivedemand(especially
onesofcontext)havebeenthemosteffectivewaystoteachmathematicsintheclassroom.If
technologyfitsintothesestrategiesandenhancesthelearning,thenitshouldbeutilized.

3. Whatroledoyouthinkdigitaltechnology(calculators,computers,video,etc.)should
playinthelearningandteachingofmathematics?(Trytobespecificaspossible).
Inmyownexperienceintheclassroom,whentechnologyiseffectivelyimplementedinthe
classroom,itplaysacriticalroleinadvancingtheteaching/understandingofmathematicsfor
students.
Technologyhelpsimprovecommunicationwithstudentsandparentsoutsidetheclassroom
throughemailandinteractivetoolslikeweebly.Teacherscanreverseclassroomsby
distributingteachingvideostostudentsashomework.Inmyexperience,improving
communicationleadstobiggerjumpsintheadvancementofstudentsintheclassroom(andhelps
ustobuildconnectionsandunderstandstudentsbetter).
Technologyalsoallowsustointroducemorefun,interaction,andcontextintomath
problems.Forexample,IcanhavestudentsbuildspinnersinGSPtodiscoverexperimentalvs.

ofthecompetitivenatureofstudentsandenhanceslearning.
Otheradvantagestechnologybringsaretoolsthatallowteacherstobemoreorganizedand

moreinformationtostudentsandallowsustoaggregatelargersetsofdataintheclassroom(for

IthinkthebestuseoftechnologythatIhavedeployedintheclassroomistheuseof
technologyasadiscoverytaskforstudentstocreateconjecturesandvalidatethemonlaptops
andcalculators.Theabilitytoprovidehandsonmanipulativehasallowedmetheabilityto
increasethecognitiveabilityoftasksintheclassroomwhichinturnleavestoabetter
understandingandfoundationofmathematicsintheclassroom.
