SEXUALITY AND SEXOLOGY- FROM PRACTICE TO SCIENCE
Summary: The paper gives a short history of sexuality in different civilizations.
The Judeo_Christian and Islamic traditions regard the sexual aspect of life
with suspicion seeing in it a necessary evil and an ever-threatening source
of sin. The reasons for this should be looked for in the classical times,more
precisely in Platos dichotomy between the body and the soul where the sexual
is related to the former which is mortal and thus less valuable. Opposite to the
Western attitudes,the Eastern traditions of Taoism and Tantrism identify sexual
practice with positive emotions they regard as a desirable and sacred duty of
each individual on his way to the divine. Due to the modern age development
of sciences,these oppositions are somewhat overcome thanks to the formation
of sexology as a positive discipline which treats sexuality in an objective way
thus highlighting only one measurable aspect of sexual lifd while the other one
related to sexual experience remains,for now,in the spheres of art and individual
experience.
