Introduction
The Modular MAC air-cooled scroll chillers continues McQuays legacy of high quality, high efficiency, latest
technology and quiet operation. Our model MAC units utilize an advanced compressor design utilizing R-22
refrigerant. These model offer modules of 15 and 20 tons, which can be combined (15 tons. with 15 tons. units and 20
tons. with 20 tons. units, no 15 tons. with 20 tons. units) to get the desired capacity, with the ability of 50% part load
capacity per module; gives an incredible flexibility when looking for the perfect combination to match your present
and future needs. Perhaps most importantly, they continue McQuays reputation for quiet operation, making MAC
chillers building friendly. McQuay provides one of the best overall value in air-cooled scroll packaged chillers
available today!
OUTSTANDING RELIABILITY

QUIET OPERATION
MAC-160A 1260A
Modular Design
The McQuays modular chillers have been designed in such a way that different loads could be satisfied due to
the combinations of these units. The largest combination is 6 modules of the same model (combinations of
different models are not allowed). They are very convenient when transportation and installation become major
issues.
Working Reliability
Each module has two circuits, two compressors and one controller. As the capacity is increased by means of
adding modules, the number of controllers, circuits and compressors are going to increase in the same way;
resulting in a very reliable product.
Factory Testing
Each unit is pressure and vacuum tested, evacuated and charged with refrigerant. It is then run at the factorys
test bench under the possible application scenarios that the unit will be facing in real life. Before shipment, each
unit is re-checked for pressure and refrigerant charge control.

General Specifications
Compressor
McQuay Modular Air Cooled Chillers are equipped with highly efficient Copelands Compliant Scroll
compressors. These rugged hermetic compressors are constructed with an integral cast iron frame, cast iron
scrolls, three Teflon impregnated bearings, and three oil filtration devices for each compressor. Using
Copeland's Compliant Scroll compressors provides two to twelve steps of capacity modulation depending on
system load and number of modules. One through up to twelve compressors can run, depending on the load of
the system, resulting in excellent part-load efficiency. Each refrigerant circuit has specially designed oil and gas
equalization lines to control oil migration. The design also offers radial and axial compliance (no tip seals), a
large internal volume for liquid handling, a removable suction screen, and a rotary dirt trap and oil screen. In
addition, the compressor is self-compensating for wear, handles moderate liquid slugging, and inherently yields
the high efficiency. This well protected compressor includes a solid-state motor protection module, 4 individual
motor winding sensors, a patented internal discharge temperature probe, and a patented shutdown feature that
prevents reverse rotation. An internal discharge check valve helps prevent shutdown noise and comes standard
with high and low pressure taps with Schrader valves, a sight glass, an oil level adjustment valve, and an off
cycle crankcase heater. Units are available in 50 and 60 Hertz with voltage configurations from 208 to 460
volts, operating at 3550 RPM.
Air-cooled Condenser
The two air cooled condenser coils with V-shaped consist of staggered rows of 3/8" OD seamless copper tube,
mechanically expanded onto die formed aluminum fins to ensure optimum heat exchange capability.
Evaporator
The heat exchanger is made of stainless steel plates closely arranged and brazed together to ensure high heat
exchange efficiency. The complete heat exchanger is insulated with thermal closed cell nitric rubber foam to
give optimum thermal insulation.
Refrigerant Circuit
The refrigerant circuit is factory brazed and evacuated before accurately charged with R22 to ensure optimum
operating requirement. To ensure flawless continuous operation, each refrigerant circuit is equipped with a
carefully sized thermostatic expansion or capillary valve. See figure 1.

Control System
Our Chiller Controller surpasses all other microprocessor-based chiller control systems available today. This
powerful, user-friendly control panel can be hooked to a Smart Manager Controller to provide the flexibility and
performance needed to operate or up to 50 chillers. The Smart Manager can be easily tied into a McQuay control
system with the capability to handle up to 120 NIM compatible Fan-Coil units.
The Chiller Controllers state-of-the-art design will not only permit the chiller to run more efficiently, but will
also simplify troubleshooting if a system failure occurs. Every Chiller Controller is programmed and tested prior
to shipment to help provide a trouble-free start-up.
Operator-friendly
The Chiller Controller menu structure is separated into five distinct categories that provide the operator or
service technician with a full description of current unit status, control parameters, and alarms. Security
protection helps prevent unauthorized changing of the set-points and unit control parameters.
The Chiller Controller continuously performs important self-diagnostic checks while monitoring system
temperatures, pressures and protection devices. It wills automatically shutdown a compressor, a refrigerant
circuit or the entire unit if a fault occurs. The cause of the shutdown will be retained in memory for operator
review. The Chiller Controller can also retain and display the time the fault occurred and the operating
conditions that were present at the time of the fault, which is an extremely useful feature for troubleshooting. In
addition to displaying alarm diagnostics, the controller also provides the operator with a warning of pre-alarm
conditions.

The Chiller Controler can switch to control/display the status

Electrical Data
Ensure that the rated voltage of the unit corresponds to that of the nameplate before general precautions.
Provide a power outlet to be used exclusively for each unit. A power supply disconnects and a circuit breaker
for over-current protection should be provided in the exclusive line. The modular air-cooled chillers must be
well grounded. It absolutely cannot be connected with gas-pipe, water pipe and telephone line.

Notes:
1.
To get the Total RLA s for multiple module units, multiply the single module the Total Rated Load Amps of one module by the numbers of modules.
2.
Unit wire size ampacity (MCA) is equal to 125% of the largest compressor-motor RLA plus 100% of RLA of all other loads in the circuit including the
control
transformer.
3.
Recommended power lead wire sizes for 3 conductors per conduit are based on 100% conductor ampacity in accordance with NEC. Voltage drop has
not
been included. Therefore, it is recommended that power leads be kept short. All terminal block connections must be made with copper (type THW) wire.
4.
Recommended Fuse Sizes are selected at approximately 150% to 175% of the largest compressor RLA, plus 100% of all other loads in the circuit.
5.
Table based on 75C field wire.
6.
A HACR breaker is a circuit breaker designed for use on equipment with multiple motors. It stands for Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration.
7.
Maximum Fuse or HACR breaker size is selected at approximately 225% of the largest compressor RLA, plus 100% of all other loads in the circuit.
8.
Total Rated Load Amps includes all compressors and fans.
The wire gauge should be sized accordingly to the power consumption of all the Modules.

Clearances
The flow of air to and from the condenser coil must not be impeded. Restricting airflow or allowing air
recirculation will result in a decrease in unit performance and efficiency because discharge pressures are
increased. There must be no obstruction above the unit that would deflect discharge air downward where it could
be re-circulated back to the inlet of the condenser coil. The condenser fans are propeller type and will not
operate with ductwork on the fan outlet.

Sound Isolation
The most effective isolation method is to locate the unit away from sound sensitive areas. Avoid locations
beneath windows or between structures where normal operating sounds may be objectionable. Reduce
structurally transmitted sound by isolating water lines, electrical conduit and the unit itself. Use wall sleeves and
rubber isolated piping hangers to reduce transmission of water or pump noise into occupied spaces. Use flexible
electrical conduit to isolate sound through electrical conduit. Spring isolators are effective in reducing the low
amplitude sound generated by scroll compressors and for unit isolation in sound sensitive areas.
