1.

General

This document provides design graphs for the selection of European rolled I-profiles to be
used as secondary beams. These graphs give the maximum span length versus the slab span,
for various profiles (IPE, HE) and various steel grades.
Two cases are considered :
Lateral Torsional Buckling (LTB) is fully prevented
No restraint to Lateral Torsional Buckling is provided, excepted at supports
Table 1.1 gives an overview of the design graphs available in this document. Where the figure
number is replaced by a cross, this means that the deflection conditions govern the choice of
section and a higher steel grade will not improve the loading capacity.

Note :

Software is available that can allow the designer in a pre-design of a single member
according to Eurocode 3 under various support and loading conditions. This software

Main assumptions

The assumptions made in preparing these graphs are:

The loads are uniformly distributed
The weight of the slab is 3,0 kN/m2
The imposed load is 3,5 kN/m2
The bending resistance is based on the plastic moment resistance (Class 1 or 2) using the
nominal yield strength of the material without taking into account any reduction related to
the thickness.
Partial factors are: G = 1,35, Q = 1,50, M0 = 1,0 and M1 = 1,0

The resistance to lateral torsional buckling is calculated according to EN 1993-1-1

6.3.2.2 using the curve a in all cases. The distributed load is assumed to be applied on
the upper flange, above the shear centre.
The imposed load deflection is limited to span / 300
The total load deflection is limited to span / 250
When lateral torsional buckling cannot be considered as fully prevented, it should be noted
that a concrete slab may have a favourable effect regarding the lateral stability of the beam.
This leads to more complex calculations.
