What Is A State Trooper?


A Trooper is certified through MCOLES and specializes in many different field
of law enforcement.
A trooper typically works out of a State Police post and patrols the roads of
an assigned geographical area to prevent or detect traffic law violations,
conducts investigations of law violations, and provides a variety of related
services to the public.
Typically, work is performed under the direction of a sergeant or lieutenant. A
trooper must routinely exercise extensive independent judgment in making
decisions that may include taking immediate actions with limited opportunity
to consider various alternatives.

Minimum Requirements

Applicant must be 21 years of age by recruit school graduation.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. A college education is not required, though it is
recommended.

Applicant must be a Michigan resident and have a valid Michigan driver's license prior to recruit school
graduation.

Applicants cannot have a felony conviction or be a suspect in case with the reasonable belief the applicant
committed a felony.

Applicants must maintain a driving record free of suspension, revocation and moving violations for the two years
prior to the Entry-Level Law Enforcement Examination and start of recruit school.

Applicants must meet the Michigan Commission On Law Enforcement Standards minimum
hearing requirements as well as the department's Visual Acuity Standards.

Salaries and Benefits

During their training, recruits receive a bi-weekly salary of approximately $1,500 (Varies with pay amount)

Starting salary for a Trooper 10 position is approximately $41,000. The maximum salary for a trooper position is
approximately $62,000 at 20 years of service.

After six years of service, troopers receive longevity pay; a lump sum provided once a year based on time-in-service.

Troopers receive health, dental, vision and life insurance from the State of Michigan. For more information about specific

Troopers earn 13 vacation days in the first calendar year, accrued four hours every two weeks. Additional vacation time is
accrued based on years of service.

Troopers earn 13 paid sick days in a calendar year, accrued four hours every two weeks.

State of Michigan employees receive 12 paid holidays per year.

All enlisted employees are provided with the required uniforms and equipment. A uniform cleaning allowance is also
provided.
