The Effect of the Columbian Exchange

on the Native Americans

The Native Americans were introduced to weapons currently unachievable

by their own technology, such as firearms.

Many lethal pathogens were passed from the inhabitants of the Old World to
the Natives, incapacitating tribes to the point that any resistance to the the
Europeans would be futile.

Domesticated animals were introduced to the Americas, which were used for
practical purposes such as hunting and farming.

Sugarcane was brought to the Americas, and in doing so brought about the
rise sugarcane as one of the greatest cash crops in history.

The Effect of the Columbian Exchange

on the Old World

Severally diseases (disputably) were passed from the Native Americans to

the Old World, including Polio and Syphilis.

Due to the technological advantages the Europeans held over the Natives,
the Europeans bartered to attain greater quantities of goods.

Diseases, though far fewer and less lethal than those spread from the
Europeans, were disseminated from the Native peoples of the Americas to
the travellers.

Who Benefitted the Most?

The Europeans

While the Europeans were not the

necessarily the most benefitted by the
trading itself, they certainly lost the least.
They contracted the fewest diseases, and
gained an entire untamed territory to
exploit. Sure, they lost Tiny Tim, but thats
about it. Darn it, polio.
