A Dogs Tale as an Allegory
A story in which each character or event is a symbol representing an
idea or quality such as truth, evil, death is known as allegory. It has
surface as well as deep meaning.
In chapter one, Collie the mother of Presbyterian, is educated and
have more knowledge than any of the other dogs. But at allegorical level,
her character is sharp criticism on the present educated scholars. As her
education was not real and was only show. The scholars in this era do the
same. They dont obtain knowledge for the sake of aesthetic delight. They
only show off the knowledge whether the knowledge seeker understands
it or not.
The scholars have no moral courage to accept the erroneous ideas
whereas they change the topic or make the very idea complicated
because they themselves are unable to understand it. Collie overcomes
her erroneous word or phrase by Synonymous. Whenever she was
caught by some active dog, she replies, Its synonymous with
supererogatory.
At deep level, the dogs tale is a criticism on education system. Most
of the students cram the words, phrases, sentences even the whole
questions as Collie crams the long phrases for six nights and tow
matinees.

In chapter three, on the surface level the events in the story suggest
the injustice attitude of the scientist towards animals whereas at the
deeper level it highlights the hypocrisy of human beings. The events in
the story represent false pretension to the animals.
The Grays show they have great love for animals as they do with
Aileen (Presbyterian). In return their love to him and to prove his
faithfulness, he saved the life of their baby in danger but his reward was

so cruel. Mr. Grays made Aileen limp. While making Aileen limp, Mr. Gray
was not ashamed at his act. He always boasts himself and his intelligence.
It shows her faithfulness towards the master and obedience to her
mother, who told her; In memory of me, when there is a time of
danger to another do not think of yourself . . .
They consider themselves civilized, educated and reasonable in
their acts but do neglect the feeling and emotions of other people.
Mr. Gray and his other friend, once, took puppy to the laboratory.
They discussed and experimented and then suddenly the puppy shrieked.
He was blind and no more could see. He was staggering around. At this
Mr. Gray shouts, There, Ive won --- confess it! Hes a blind as a
bat.
So, we are able to conclude, the story
