Abstract. Assessment of pervasive developmental disorders is an issue of debate and remains a field of research for
different specialists (medical doctors, psychologists, teachers,
speech therapists etc) and it remains a field for research. For
many years neither criteria nor ways and processes commonly accepted had been defined. Nowadays it has been accepted that autism is a pervasive developmental disorder and
is characterized by several special behavioral symptoms. The
two commonly accepted diagnostic systems are a) the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV
(1994), of the American Psychiatric Association and the manual International Categorization of Diseases ICD-10 (1993)
10th ed of the World Health Organization. These have been
achieved after many years of trials and experi-ments of
diagnostic systems. The creation of a diagnostic system with
relative credibility demands the empirical trial and the
abandonment of inaccurate characteristics and uncertain
conclusions on causes. It is also important the diagnostic
system to be able to identify the specific disorder among
the disorders that have common symptoms. DSM-IV discriminate autistic disorders from Rett syndrome, Asperger syndrome and PDD-NOS. The article examines diagnostic criteria
of pervasive developmental disorders and some tools of
assessment for children with special needs.
