Around34,000studentsand10,000facultymembersfrom70medicalanddentalcollegesaffiliatedtotheDr.N.T.R.UniversityofHealth
ScienceinAndhraPradeshandTelanganahavebeengivenonlineaccessto5,294journalsandthousandsofdigitalbooksthroughagateway
portal.
InauguratingtheportalattheUniversityhereonMondayViceChancellorT.RaviRajusaidthatDr.N.T.R.HealthUniversitywasthefirstin
thecountrytoextendthefacilitytoallcollegesincluding220nursingcollegesaffiliatedtoit.
HesaidthattheUniversityspendsbetweenRs.3croreandRs.4croreperannumtosubscribetothebestofmedicaljournals,butneitherthe
studentsnorthefacultymembersweremakingproperuseofthemforvariousreasons.Numberofbooksandcomputersweremadeavailable
inalllibrariesaspertheMCInorms,butmanydidnothavethetimetogotothem.Theusageinsomecollegeswaszero,hesaid.
Withthelaunchingofthegatewayportalthiswealthofinformationcouldbeaccessedanywhereontheinternet.Moststudentshadinterneton
theirsmartphonessotheycouldaccessitevenathome.Theusershadtoregisterinadvancewiththeiremailidentitytogetapersonalised
passwordwhichtheycanchangesubsequently,heexplained.
Thenewtrendinthemedicalfraternitywastheemergenceofthephysicianscientist.Researchdoesnotmeaninventingthings.Itmeans
havinggoodstatisticsandmakingepidemiologicalsurveys,hesaid.Medicinewasbecomingmoreindividualisedandpersonaliseddepending
onthegeneticpeculiaritiesofthelocalpopulationsanddoctorsneededtobelearningcontinuously.
