Learning Experience 4

Experience: Dinosaur Patterns

Date: 11 / 05/ 2015

Child/ren planned for: Humpty Doo Pre- School (small group)

Links: The
children love to explore dinosaurs
and aspects of mathematics will be
implemented into the activity as they
are learning their counting numbers.

Rationale:
The children are gaining a broad understanding of dinosaurs and being in Preschool, the little playing/toy dinosaurs can be manipulated to implement aspects of
mathematics into the children learning
Learning focus:
EYLF outcomes: 4.2 & 5.2; the children will develop problem solving skills and begin
to work out the patterns with material on dinosaur patterns.
The children work with aspects of mathematics as they identify patterns and solve
problem around sorting the dinosaurs.
Requirements/resources:
The sorting dinosaurs having multi-colored plastic dinosaurs specifically for
sorting the colors and identities of the dinosaurs. Also to have the patterns printed
off on paper or drawn for the children to work out the reoccurring patterns of the
dinosaurs.

Facilitiation/Implementation:
Preparation:
To lay the material out on the table or location of choice. The children are able to
choose sheets of patterns and try work the sequence as they place the identical
dinosaurs together.
Guided questions will be given for children to reflect the process, i.e. what are the
name of these dinosaurs?, do you see the same colors on the sheet?, do you
see a pattern? and how many different dinosaurs are there until it repeats?
I will use these questions, or change the language choice I use depending on the
child I ask, to guide me through the lesson and assist with the teaching and
learning between the students and teacher.

Evaluation/follow up:
- To extend the children may be able to perform if they wish to put on a show as dramatic play,
to pretend to be in a story of dinosaurs. The story line can be completely made up or it can be a
singing performance, whatever they wish.
- I would also allow them to draw or imagine what would I eat if I was a dinosaur?, there could
be class discussion on it.
