Japanese Entry Level Requirements

Who should complete a placement test:

any applicant who has not studied Japanese at the Oxford University Language
Centre and is therefore unsure about his/her level

any applicant who has studied at the Oxford University Language Centre, but for
whatever reason has been unable to complete the final exam or to give the
presentation.

About the exam:

The placement test should be completed before the official OPAL course application
deadline (for further information, please see the Centre's main webpage).

The applicant should give notice in advance to the tutor that s/he is going to take the
placement test. (Tutor: Keiko Harada: keiko.harada@orinst.ox.ac.uk)

The placement test sheet should be picked up at the reception desk of the Centre.

The test should be completed in no more than 60 minutes.

The test should be completed under strict exam conditions and dictionaries should not
be consulted.

The applicant should ensure that s/he produces legible script in both hiragana and
katakana. (No knowlege of kanji is required)

When finished, the test sheet should be given back to the receptionist.

The pass mark is 65%

About the Levels:

Level 1 = Basic (ie. Complete Beginners/Basic Knowledge of Japanese)

Level 2 = Elementary (ie. Basic level has been successfully completed)

Level 3 = Threshold (ie. Elementary level has been successfully completed)

Level 4 = Vantage (ie. Threshold level has been successfully completed)

Level 5 = Bridge (ie. Vantage level has been successfully completed)
