The Crimean Crisis is an ongoing dispute
resulting from an international crisis in
2014 involving Russia and Ukraine
involving the control of the Crimean peninsula.
Past
In the past this piece of land has been owned by Ukraine in the past,
but Russia saw it fit to be part of their country. After the Russian
Revolution of 1917, Crimea became a republic within the USSR,
however in 1954 it was transferred to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist
Republic thanks to the work of Communist Party General Secretary
Nikita Khrushchev. In 1991 it became part of independent Ukraine as
the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
Present
Lasting 24 days, the 2014
Crimean crisis resulted in Russias
seizing control of Crimea. As
shown in the picture to the left,
the major ethnic heritage on the peninsula was Russian, which was
part of the reason for reason for Russias actions. However, the main

cause of the crisis was the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution. In present day,
the Republic of Crimea is declared with the intention of joining Russia
after a disputed referendum passed with 96% in support.
Future
As for the future of Crimea, daily life will, for the most part, not change.
Taxi business owner Vladimir Tolmachyov was initially hoping for
Crimeas independence, how he has
changed sides now that he has seen
his business grow. Many reports
claim that Ukraine, Crimea, and
Russia will have a very stable future
ahead, even though the situation is
still slightly tense. 70% of the
tourists that visited Crimea in the
past came from Ukraine. Today,
popular destinations are completely empty. According to Ukrainian
leader Klimkin, the referendum that was passed was a farce, and
highly biased. In November he returned to Russia in an attempt to
improve relations between the two countries. Many reports claim that
Crimeas future is a sort of Putinland harshly governed by Russia.
