The finding light in the darkness theme is expressed very well and very clearly
in the film Life is Beautiful. First, when Uncle Leo, Joshua, and Guido used his
entertaining personality to make a game out of what was happening to them, a surprise
birthday present for Joshua, and the winner of said game would win a new, real, tank.
Guido did this so Joshua wouldnt know where they were really going. By doing this
Guido was able to save his son's innocence in the midst of darkness/imminent death.
Another example of light in the darkness is when Dora demands to be out on the train
so she would be with her family, even though she knew where they were going, and
what was happening/ going to happen upon arrival at the camp. This was an example of
light in the darkness because through the darkness (the concentration camps) there
was light (a family doing everything they can to stay together). Lastly, when Guido
comes back to the barracks and he tells Joshua that they had earned 60 points that day,
even though the other kids at the camp said they didnt know about the game, to which
Guido responded they want to make sure that you dont win, and that for the 60 points
they earned they got a piece of bread. This just adds on to the entertaining, and fastthinking personality of Guido, that when faced with a problem/darkness, he is able to
find a solution/light.
