[ASSIGNMENT 2: HEAT TRANSFER]

Question 1
In a research laboratory, engine oil (Cp = 2200 J/kg.K) is to be heated from 30 C to 75 C at the
rate of 0.2 kg/s in a 1.5 cm diameter thin walled copper tube by condensing steam outside at a
temperature of 140 C (hfg = 2354 kJ/kg) with an overall heat transfer coefficient of 450 W/m2.K
a) Draw the temperature profile of the system
(3 marks)
b) Determine the heat transfer and the length required to achieve the desire temperature.
(7 marks)
Question 2
In a manufacturing plant, a shell and tube heat exchanger with 2 shell passes and 8 tube
passes is used to heat ethyl alcohol (Cp = 2580 J/kg.K) in the tubes from 35 C to 60 C at the
rate of 2.5 kg/s. The heating is done by water (Cp = 4190 J/kg.K) that enters the shell side at 95
C and leaves at 45 C. Calculate the heat transfer area required if the average heat transfer
coefficients of ethyl alcohol and water are 1400 W/m2.K and 650 W/m2.K, respectively.
(10 marks)
Question 3
Hot oil (Cp = 2890 J/kg K) enters the shell of a counter flow heat exchanger at 55 C to be
cold to 30 C by cold water enters the tube side at 15 C (Cp = 4180 J/kg K). The mass flow
rate of the cold water is the same as hot oil.
a)
