Whatwasdoneinthesession:Thisweekwasthestartofthecreatestage,andIhavedecidedtostart
onmyfirstscene(onland)andIhavedecidedtouseBryce7.1completelyforsaidscene.Thisis
becauseIfindthatBrycehasverynicetextureswhenitcomestoterrainsandrocks,andIfeellikethis
wouldbeveryusefulformyvideo.Ispenttheweekcreatingawaterplaneandplacingitsuchthatits
nexttothelandplane,givinganislandillusion.
Whatwaslearnt:IlearntseveralthingsonBryce,likematerialeditingandcorrectplacementofthe
waterplanes,asthewrongplacementmightjustaffectthelandplaneaswell,thusaffectingthewhole
scene
Howthesolutionhasdevelopedorchanged:Thesolutionhasnotchangedsofar,itisstillgoingas
statedintheDevelopingIdeasstage

Whatwasdoneinthesession:Thesetwoweekswerespentoncreatingandperfectingthemain
terrainontheisland.Itstartedoffquitedifficult,astheterrainwouldoftenmessuptheplacementof
thewaterplaneunderit,oritwouldnotbecorrectlyplacedontheplane.Ispenttwoinclasssessions
tryingtofixthis,andbythethird,Ichangedthewaterplanesplacement,andtheproblemwasfixed
immediately.Ithenstartedtoworkontheterrainitself.Ivedecidedtonotchangetheheight,asIfind
thatitsheightisquitesuitablealready,butIdidchangethematerialtoWorldSpace
Whatwaslearnt:IhadlearntregardingtheseveralmaterialsonBryceforterrain,andhowitwouldfit
withmywaterandlandplanes.ThematerialsthatIhadpredictedandplannedtousewasnotthemost
suitable,thusIhadtodotrialanderroronthematerialsthatBryceoffers.
Howthesolutionhasdevelopedorchanged:Ihavedecidedtonotchangetheheightoftheterrain,as
Ifoundthatitwasunnecessarytodoso.Idid,however,changethematerialoftheterrainasIfound
thattherockymaterialdidnotsuitwellwithmywaterplane.Ialsochangedthewaterplanes
positionandtexture;positiontoallowthemainterraintobeplacedaboveit,andtexturewassuchthat
therewouldbeareflectionoftheterrainand(later)trees,astheoldplanedidnothavethatreflective
featureonit.Thiswouldcreateamorerealfeeltothevideolateron.
Whatisneededtodonext:Afterthecreationofthemainterrain,Iplantocreateothersmallerterrains
aroundit(asmentionedinmydrawings)aswellasstartingtocreatethetreesontheislanditself.
Minordetailslikeskypatternswillalsobeeditednextsession.
Skillsthatareneededtolearn:TheeditingofSkyandFog,creatingterrainsatanangle,aswellas

Whatwasdoneinthesession:Thesefourhourswerespentonfinishinguptheterrainasawhole,that
includescreatingtheother4terrainsaroundthemainone,aswellascreatingthe20orsotreesaround
it.Theterraincreationwentsmoothlyandsodidthecreationofthetrees.Nodrasticchangeswere
madetothesolution,exceptafewminorplacementchanges.
Whatwaslearnt:TheskillthatIhavedevelopedinthisstageiscreatingtheterrainsatanangle.As
mycamerawillbeofaspecificangle,Ihavetocreatetheterrainsinawaysuchthattheterrainscanbe
seenfromthecameraangle,andisnotflat.Ihavelearntthatplacingtheterrainsata1520degree
anglehelpswiththisproblem.
Howthesolutionhasdevelopedorchanged:Theonlychangesthatweremadeinthisstageisthe
placementoftrees,asIfoundthatthecameraangledoesnotlookaestheticallypleasingwiththetrees
wheretheyoriginallywere,thereforeIdecidedtoscatterthemaroundmoreandthishasimprovedthe
generalaestheticsbyalot.
Whatisneededtodonext:IdidnothavetimetoedittheSkyandFogoptionthereforethiswillbefor
nextsession.Iwillalsorenderpreviewandseeifanyminorchangesneedtobemade,andifnotIwill
startworkingonthecameraanglesandkeyframes.
Skillsthatareneededtolearn:TheskillsthatIwillneedarefortheSkyandFogediting,andthese
canbeacquiredfrommyresearchasitwasbrieflymentionedaswellastheinternetifIneedmore

Whatwasdoneinthesession:Thissessionismytargetedfinalsessionforeditingofterrainsand
landscape.IstartedoffbyeditingmySkyandFogsettingtoOvercastandmakingsureallsuitsthe
imageIhadofthelandscape.ThesettingoftheskyisslightlygloomierthanIhadinmind,butitdoes
suitmythemeofthevideothatIllmake.Inoticedthatsomeofthetreesarenotintherightplace,soI
decidedthatneededtobefixed.Otherminortweakslikepositioningofterrainsabovewater,etc.were
madeandIbelievethatthisisreadyforfilmingbynextsession.
Whatwaslearnt:Nonewskillswereacquiredinthissession,onlysharpenedoldones
Howthesolutionhasdevelopedorchanged:Theskyhasturneddarkerthandrawnonpaper(in
DevelopingIdeas),andtherearemoreterrainsthandrawnaswell,butallthesechangesweremadedue
tothefactthattheynowsuitthegenerallandscapemore.Forexample,thewhitemountainsuitsbetter
withadarkskyratherthanabrightone,andmoreminiterrainshelptogivetheaudienceafeelthat
theresmoreunknownthattheycannotsee,whichsuitsthemysteryfeelofthevideointhefirst
place.
Whatisneededtodonext:Afterthis,asmysceneiscomplete,Iwillhavetoworkonthecamera
anglesandkeyframesforthevideo.Iwillidentifytherightanglestofilmthematandpossiblymake
anglechangestotheterrains,dependingonhowthecameraangleis.

figuringoutwhichanglesaremostsuitableforthescenesthatIwillfilm.Ivedecidedtotakethe
backwardscameraangleasithassuspensetoit.Italsoshowsmoreofthesmallerterrainsatthe
background,andthiswasexactlythePOVthatIwasaimingfor.
Whatwaslearnt:Ivelearntalottoday,regardingkeyframesandhowtheywork,aswellascamera
POVsandhowtheymustchangefromwhatweplanforthemtobe,duetoitschangedsurrounding.
Ivelearntregardingcameraangles,specificones,aretheonesthathelpcreatemoodandemotionin
thevideo.Theseanglesalsoneedtobeplacedattherighttimetomakesureitworksitseffectsonthe
audience.
Howthesolutionhasdevelopedorchanged:Thecameraangleshavechanged(majorityofit),and
ratherthandivingintothewater,Ivedecidedtochangeitsuchthatitgoesaroundtheterrainas
opposedtobeinginit,togivetheoverviewoftheworld.
Whatisneededtodonext:TheresnothinglefttodoinBryce7.1afterthis,otherthanrenderingand
filmingtheactualscenes.However,afterthis,IwillspendallmytimewithAlice3.0formyactual

Whatwaslearnt:IlearntthebasicsofAliceanditscharacters,exploringwhatitoffersintermsof
characters.IalsocharacterplacementinAliceandtheeditingofindividualcharacterswhichwillhelp
meintermsofidentifyingonemainmanateeasthemainone(camerafocusonit,animatesthatfor
video).
Howthesolutionhasdevelopedorchanged:Thewholesolutionitselfhaschanged,asIhadplanned
touseBryceformyunderwateraswell.However,IvenoticedthatBryceisverydifficulttoworkwith
whenIhavecharacters,therefore(aftersuggestionfromMr.JonesandMs.Scott)Iveresortedto
Alice,anditwasadecisionthatIdonotregret.Itsuserfriendlinessacceleratestheprocess,meaningI
willhavemoretimetofocusoncameramarkersandfilming.

lineofthe7thcameramarker,AlicehadfrozewhenIwantedtorunit,thereforeIdecidedtosaveand
leavethescenealone,andIwouldlatercomebacktoit.Meanwhile,IhaddecidedthatitisbestthatI
usethistimetoworkonmylastscene,asitisthesimplest.Icreatedanewprojectformyseasurface
scene,andcodedthetwolinesforthesceneinmyvideoinwhichthecameradivesintothewater
(beforetheunderwaterscene).
Whatwaslearnt:IhadmainlylearntaboutthecameracommandsinAlice,andwhichonesaremost
suitableformyscene.Ihadfoundthatmoveandorienttoismostusefulformyunderwaterscene,
andthiswasonethatIhadusedmost.

Whatwasdoneinthesession:Alice3haddetectedsomebuginmypreviousproject,andevenafterI
hadreportedit,itstillwillnotopenmyproject.IveattemptedtoredownloadAlicetwice,restartedmy
computer,andduplicatedthefileandnoneofthemworked.Therefore,Ihaveresortedtostartingmy
projectover.Luckily,Ihavescreenshotthecodingpage(forthepreviousprocessjournalentry)andI
canbasemycodeoffofthat.Ialsohavescreenshotsofmyscenesfromcertainangles(formyfreeze

Sofar,theunderwatersceneisworkingoutnicelyasAlice3isveryeasytoworkwith.The
animationsareeasiertoresize,rotate,etc.whichincreasestheoriginalityofmyscene.The
scenesofarhasthemainmanateeinitaswellasacoupleofothertypesoffishes,andthe
centertreetrunkonit.Sofar,itsturningoutlikeIwantitto.
Repetitionisapronedtoproblemwhenitcomestotheanimation,asitsdefaultanimalsare
numbered,especiallytheunderwaterones
Ihavetoplacetheanimalssuchthattheyappearfullandnotrepetitive.Thisincludesusing
differenttypesofthesameanimal(e.g.MossManateeandNormalManatee)andtoavoid
placingthesametypesoffish/animalstooclosetoeachotherunlesstheyrepartofaschool,
asplacingthemclosewillmakeitseemlimitedandnotvaried

Sofar,theanimationandcodingthatIverunthrougharejustliketheonesIhadinmind
duringtheDevelopingIdeasstage.Thespeedisquiteprecise,thecameraanglesareright
andtheanimationisjustwhatIwantedformymessage.Also,formysecondscene,asitis
fairlysimple,notmuchhastobedoneinorderforittoturnoutnicely
