Brian'sBrainisacellularautomatondevisedby
BrianSilverman,whichisverysimilartohisSeeds
pattern.Itconsistsofaninfinitetwodimensional
gridofcells,butunlikeSeeds,eachcellmaybein
oneofthreestates:on,dying,oroff.Eachcellis
consideredtohaveeightneighbors(Moore
neighborhood),asinSeedsandConway'sGameof
Life.Ineachtimestep,acellturnsonifitwasoff
buthadexactlytwoneighborsthatwereon,justlike
thebirthruleforSeeds.Allcellsthatwere"on"go
intothe"dying"state,whichisnotcountedasan
"on"cellintheneighborcount,andpreventsanycell
frombeingbornthere.Cellsthatwereinthedying
stategointotheoffstate.
Becauseofthecellularautomaton'sname,some
websitescomparetheautomatontoabrainandeach
ofitscellstoaneuron,whichcanbeinthree
differentstates:ready(off),firing(on),and
refractory(dying).[1][2]

spaceships,rakesanddiagonalwaves.Inthis
animation,theoncellsarewhiteandthedyingcells
areblue.

The"dyingstate"cellstendto
leadtodirectionalmovement,soalmosteverypatterninBrian'sBrainisa
spaceship.Manyspaceshipsarerakes,whichemitotherspaceships.Anotherresult
isthatmanyBrian'sBrainpatternswillexplodemessilyandchaotically,andoften
willresultinorcontaingreatdiagonalwavesofonanddyingcells.Forexamplea
2x2blockofoncellswillresultinaneverexpandingdiamondconsistingoffour
diagonalwavesthatmoveacrosstheplaneatthepattern'sspeedoflight.
Nevertheless,oscillatorshavebeenconstructedinBrian'sBrain.Anexamplehas
justfouroncellsandfourdyingcells,andoscillateswithperiod3.[3]
