ASSIGNMENT 2: ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE OF MALAYSIA

The objective of this assignment is to introduce students to the range of contem

porary artistic productions of the Muslims in Malaysia through visual appraisal
of selected monuments. The project begins with a site visit to a selected Islami
c monument such as a mosque, madrasah, tomb or a palace etc. The tasks for this
project are:
A.

Research and report writing:

Conduct a research on the selected monument through interviews and literature re

view. Write a brief historical background, consisting of information on patron/o
wner/designer, site, contemporary usage etc. (This must not exceed 2 pages of te
xt, not including photographs). Describe the monument using the building checkli
st as a guide (see Appendix).
B.

Detailed analysis of the building visual pattern:

Appraise the visual characteristics of the building. The descriptions must inclu
de:
Sketches, images of selected elements such as doors, windows, decorative pan
els etc.
Plan, section, elevation of detail drawings where applicable
Layout of the building
Discussions on motifs, colours, materials and technology involved in the mak
ing
Artistic influence

A4 Report

Each report is to consist:

Cover page, title, department name, university logo, and date of submission.
Table of content (with page numbers and authors)
Introduction, content, conclusion, page numbers
Reference and bibliography
Minimum 10 pages of text (not included images)
D.
