    The Literacy Leaders Club aims to address low literacy rates in Providence by working with first graders to help them learn to read and comprehend. The club was previously run through the Children in Poverty program and worked with a local Head Start preschool. Under new leadership, the club will continue to encourage reading through activities like reading books, arts and crafts, and worksheets with children. They will also host a parent night for children to present projects and for parents to learn literacy activities to do at home. The first club meeting will be on April 14th and they will work with students at Veterans Elementary on Wednesdays after school.

    Providence-- only 1 in 3 children enter school with
    appropriate reading levels (Providence Talks)
    Low-income children hear, on average, 30 million
    words less than high-income children (Betty Hart,
    professor in Child Development)
    Trouble learning new words throughout their education

    Some parents arent confident in their ability to


    help their child academically (Margaret Finders,
    professor in English Education)
