Assignment/Activity Title Mentor Sage Monologue

Year Freshman
Skill Writing
Portfolio Category Media and Communications

The Mentor Sage Monologue assignment allowed me to view the world of media and
communications in a brand new way. While interviewing my Grandpa for this project, he
enriched me on his understanding of how the media has shaped society. I included many aspects
of his point of view on this situation in my actual monologue, which I performed in front of my
CAP Drama class. My Grandpa, James Dailey, told me about the new developments of
technology that were occurring during the time that he was growing up, and in all of the years of
his life.
He told me of how new media developments were affecting WWII, and how all new graphic
information was being seen by the millions of people in America, thanks to these new media
occurrences. In the interview, he told me about how newly released pictures he saw depicting
Japanese soldiers throwing babies up in the air and catching them on bayonets, and interviews
released of Japanese citizens, saying that they knew of the monstrosities occurring in their
nation, and that they would rather die for their country than abandon it despite the affairs
ravaging it, affected his personal opinion on the dropping on the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki.
This project was a real experience for me, and it resulted in my learning of information about
my Grandpa that I didnt know, and also about events regarding the history of my country. The
project helped me understand for how long the media had been shaping society, and how any one
thing could change a persons mind or point of view on a topic, whether that topic be an
important political topic such as the dropping of an atomic bomb, or something completely
different.
