Masters Question explanation: u5336300 SHYAM RAVI

After two weeks of continuous receiving of signal the battery life may
considerably reduce if the system is a high power consuming one. Some of the impacts that may occur
are that the maximum voltage may reduce and this will greatly affect the decoding ability of the system.
The following part explains in detail the impact battery life will have on the receiver. A single top-end
lithium-ion battery has a capacity of about 2600mAh. Let's go with that figure as a baseline for absolute
best-case. The way you calculate theoretical maximum running time for a load is simply capacity divided
by load. If your load is 1mA, you can run it for 3400 / 1 = 3400 hours = 141 days = ~5 months. However,
this is only a theoretical maximum, since you'll start to get significant voltage drooping around 65% into
that time. So from the above result we can clearly know that after a week there would be a

considerable drop in voltage there by making the receiver unusable. Another important factor is
that the memory value will be unstable as the system will struggle to differentiate between digital
HIGH and LOW. Sometimes the voltage drop causes it to move to the undefined region and the
system may return corrupt values.
Methods to improve battery life:
One of the method that can be used to improve battery life is to program SLEEP MODE into the program.
Timers can be used to activate the standby mode if the M0 supports it and awake the program to ACTIVE
MODE when the signal is about to be received. This will exponentially improve the battery life. Another
common method used to supply uninterrupted voltage to the M0 is by using a voltage regulator. It is
mostly a capacitor connected in parallel. Though it would provide a steady voltage to the ADC and VCC
there may not be considerable extension in battery life. The most common method that can be effectively
used is by connecting directly with the main supply and using battery as backup.
The most efficient way would be t increase the sampling time of the ADC to collect HR data. Since the
requirement is only for every 10 min, the data may be recorded for maybe every 1 min or more and then
summarized.
MEMMORY CONSTRAINTS
There would be significant memory constraint for storing data for 2 week period in the M0. The internal
memory size is in a few kB. The most efficient way would be to add a micro-SD card and the data written
into it through a serial transfer or USART port. This simply would solve the memory problem and would
not take up much size.
