Mission & Core Values 18

The 2012-2013 year provided a time of exploration and celebration
of priorities and successes, commitment to service, and a continued
focus on partnerships and the McLennan Community College of the
future.

Success for our students has always been mission central, and quality faculty
continues to provide an extraordinary education within the classroom and through
research and practical experiences. The Highlander Undergraduate Research Insti-
tute has become an impressive vehicle for challenging our students to achieve greater
heights. Scholarship programs such as the Honors College, Presidential Scholars, and
Rapoport First Generation Scholars provide enhancement and volunteer opportuni-
ties. The full implementation of the Learning Environment Adaptability Project (LEAP)
has been supported campus-wide to invest in students. From my perspective, our
incredible employees across disciplines are working to find best practices to support
our students, which leads to benefits to our community, state, and nation.

Nowhere was caring and concern revealed more than the many ways our employees
and students responded to help those affected by the explosion at West. Everyone
was touched in some way, and all stood in the gap in a variety of ways.

Our partnerships with our University Center partners continue to flourish as we

expand programs, and our relationship with Baylor grows as we have continued to
address and explore new articulation agreements. Our partnership with the Family
Health Center provided shared simulations, and we have just begun these efforts for
collaboration.

All consuming this year has been our focus on emerging markets — market research,
University Center, Baylor-McLennan partnership, academic programming, student
life, articulation agreements, international students, and facilities and funding — with
promises for future opportunities. The landscape continues to change, and there
are challenges in changing enrollment patterns, but the opportunities for successful
careers for our students and support for economic development of our community
make McLennan Community College an exciting place to be.

With sincere best regards,

Johnette McKown, Ed. D.
