Chain Drive with Guideways
in the Engine Type 84VT2BF-180
Dear Sirs,
On 8-cylindered engines the varying torques in the camshaft coming from
the cam movement are larger than for other cylinder numbers. The varying
forces in the chains resulting herefrom can generate transversal vibrations
in the free chain parts between guideways and chain wheels, @ condition
which can be further intensified by pitch errors in chain and/or chain
wheel and by a chain which is insufficiently tightened or has undue friction
in some of the links.
To obtain more safety margin from these vibrations we have, therefore,
increased the tightening force of the chain on 8 cylindered engines from
4,500 kg to 5,000 kg with which we have obtained satisfactory results.
IF transversal vibrations occur, the additional influences hereby transmitted
to the guideways may cause loosening of nuts in the stiffening cross-bars
between the channel irons for guideways at the bottom end near chain wheel
on the crankshaft. The transverse vibration of the two chains will propably
not be in phase which has the further effect that the channel irons are
exposed to a torsional strain.
These conditions have in two cases been the cause of breakage ot the
support A on drawing No. 428145-5.0.
It is, therefore, recommended to check the chain tightening at intervals and
to check the guide rails and suporting bars for loosening and formation of
cracks.2 SL69-11/JES
To obtain a more stiff attachment of the lower channel: irons we have
Prepared enclosed drawing No. 428145-5.0, list of parts No. 429486-3.0,
ond we recommend this to be made in any case on plants where
tendency to loosening of the channel irons and formation of cracks have
been found. For other plants of the 84VT2BF-180 type with guideways we
recommend that the stiffening is mounted at @ convenient opportunity.
Yours faithfully,
for BURMEISTER & WAIN
