Adjustment and Mounting of Piston-Rod
Dear Sirs,
As in some cases scuffing has occurred between piston rod and the ends of
the Heco-ring segments resulting in excessive leakage, we take the
opportunity to state the procedure for the mounting of the Heco-ring piston
rod stuffing box.
According to the drawings the surface finish of the piston rod should be
10-15 microinches CLA.
For adaption of the scraper rings @ sheet of emery cloth of about 0.4 mm
thickness and with a grain size 300 is placed tightly round the piston rod.
The base ring segments mounted with the Heco-lamellae are now one by one
held tightly against the emery cloth and rotated a little back and forth.
By so doing the ring ends ore somewhat eased so they do not touch the
piston rod with the outermost 10-15 mm.
The segments of the air sealing rings are treated the same way and by blue
marking it is ascertained that all segments are relieved as described.
Before mounting, the piston rod is coated with Molykote and the stuffing-box
parts cleaned.
The stuffing box ought to follow the piston rod at dismantling and mounting
and the piston rod should preferably not be moved through a mounted stuffing
box.
Yours faithfully,
