AttendanceisimportanthereatBlackstone.Notjustbecauseyoucanfail,but
becausetheteacherswontstoptheirlessonsbecauseyouareabsent.They
willteachwhattheyhaveplannedandyoumustmakeupthework.Thatmay
bedifficultifyoudon'tunderstandtheirlessonplanandhavequestionsbutno
onetohelpyou.AlsoIfyouareabsentfor4ormoredaysunexcusedduringa
quarteryouwillfailyourclass,butBlackstonehasabuybackpackthatgives
youoneabsenceback.Toearnthatabsencebackyoumustshowupontime
forclasseverydayforoneweekandgetasignedpaperbytheteachertoget
thatoneabsencebackandnotfailtheirclass.
Advisoryiswherestudentsgettoknoweachothermoreandusetheirtime
wiselyonschoolworkandpreparingportfolios.Attheendoftheyear,students
needtopresenttheirportfoliowhichincludesreadonsummaries,collegevisits,
summerplans,writeon,HabitsofMindessay,FacingHistoryReflection,and
MorningMeetingevidence.
B. Behavior
BehaviorisoneofBlackstone'smottos.Allstudentsareexpectedtobeontheir
bestbehaviorandgiverespecttoanyonewhileinthebuilding.Blackstonealso
expectstheirstudentsbestbehaviorwhenaconflictcomesup.
C. CommunityEngagement/Collaboration/Creativity
Blackstonehasastrongbondwithitscommunityandencouragesitsstudents
toworkwiththecommunity.Blackstonemakessurethatthestudentshavea
strongbondwiththecommunitynotonlytobenefittheschool,buttoalso
becomestrongerwitheachother.
EveryoneatBlackstoneusescollaborationinabeneficialway.Thestudents
havegoodconnectionswiththeteachersandfaculty,thereforetheyareableto
talkwheneverneedbe.Alsothestudentsconnectwellwitheachothersoif
theyneedhelpwithanyclasstheyareabletocommunicateandhelpeach
other.
CreativityisstronglyshowninBlackstoneinmanyways.Forexample,ifthe
studentshaveafashionshowtheymustorganizebuthavenothingtopresent
orshow,theywillaskstoresandstudentsfordonationsbuttheywillalso
decoratetheschoolthemselves.ThisisagreatwayforBlackstonestudentsto
cometogetherinapositiveway.
D. Detention
Detentionisaconsequencegiventoanyonewhobreaksordisrespectsa
Blackstonerule/policy.Detentionisusuallythefirstpunishment.Ifaruleis

brokenagain,youwouldmostlikelygetinschoolsuspension.Ifyoubreakthe
ruleathirdtimeyouarethengoingtogetsuspended.Theseriousnessofthe
rulebreakingwilldeterminetheconsequencesgiven.
E. Effort
EffortiswhateveryoneatBlackstoneexpectsfromyou.Alltheteachersput
effortintotheirplanssotheyexpectyourefforttoworkback.Alsostudentsput
theireffortintotheirworksoifyouarepartneredupyouaresupposedtoput
youreffortintotheproject.Anotherpartwhereeffortcomesiniswithcoming
togetherasaschool.Everyoneisexpectedtoshowsomeeffortbyparticipating
inschoolactivities.
F. Family/Fighting
Familyisntonlybyblood,butbyconnectionsandstrongbonds.AtBlackstone
Academy,everyonetreatseachotherasiftheyareatruefamily.Students
havestrongbondswithboththeirteachersandclassmates.
FightingwithyourfistsandhurtfulwordsisnottoleratedhereatBlackstone.On
theotherhand,standingupforwhatyoubelieveinandfightingforthatis
toleratedjustaslongasitsschoolappropriate.
G. Grit/Gratitude
GritisstronglyencouragedatBACS.Allstudentsarepushedtosolvetheirown
conflicts.BACSfacultyisconfidentthatthatthestudentsarecapableofsolving
theirownproblemsbecausetheyaremature.BACSalsowishesyoutakegrit
outoftheschoolanduseittowardanyotherproblems.
EveryoneinBACSshowsgratitudebybeingthankfultooneanother.All
studentsknowtheirmannersandrespecttowardsoneanother,thereforethey
showit.
H. Humility
Humilityisfinallyrecognizingtheimportanceyoushow.Blackstonewantsyou
tostandupandexplainwhatyoudidtohelpoutthecommunity.Theywantyou
takeinandvaluewhatyouhavedone.Theywantyoutonoticethatyoumade
atinydifference.
I. Integrity
IntegrityisaresponsibilityforallBACSstudents.Theyshouldnotlieorgive
falseinformations.Thestudentshavethefacultystrustandshouldn'ttake
advantage.Blackstonetakesplagiarismseriouslybuttheteachershave
enoughtrustandexpectthestudentstocomecleaniftheydoplagiarise.
J. Judgement
JudgingpeopleinabadwayisnottoleratedatBlackstone.Blackstoneisa
judgementfreezone.Theywishforeveryonetofeelsafeandbesafe,
thereforetheydonotacceptdisrespectfulcommentstowardssomeone,

LearningsomethingneweverydayiswhatBACSisallabout.Blackstonehasa
strongacademiccurriculumandyouwillgettheeducationyoudeservehere.
MorningMeeting
MorningMeetingisamajorpartofBlackstone.Eachadvisoryisgivenweeks
farapartfromeachotherwheretheyplanapresentationforeachday.The
presentationusuallyconsistsofgoodmorning,thepledgeofallegiance,any
announcements,collegeoftheweek,quoteoftheday,andcleanyourtables
andgettoclass.Usuallytheadvisorywouldaddinafewmoredifferentand
uniqueslidessoeachpersoncantalk.
Names
Blackstoneisthetypeofschoolwhereeveryoneknowseachotherand
everyoneistreatedwiththesamerespect.Sinceteachersareallowedtocall
studentsbytheirfirstnames,BACSallowsstudentstocallallteachersbytheir
firstnamestoo.
Optimism
BeingoneoftheHabitsofMind,thedefinitionofoptimismisbelievingthat
oneslife,community,andworldcangetbetterwitheffort.Thisencourages
studentstoputeffortineverythingtheydo.Italsogivesthemconfidenceand
hopeinalltheworktheydo.
Portfolio
Portfolioistakenseriouslyeveryyearbyeveryteacherandstudent.Itincludes
makingawebsitepresentingeachclassthroughouttheyear,collegevisits,
extracurricularactivities,andalladvisorytasks.Inordertopasstothenext
gradelevel,eachstudentmustpresentandpasstheirportfolio.
Qualities
BACShasmanyqualitiesotherschoolsdonthave,anditswhatmakesit
special.Wearearelativelysmallschool,andareallowedtocallteachersand
facultybytheirfirstnames.Theschoolisalsoinvolvedwithmanyorganizations
eachyear.Forexample,theschooloffersstudentstheopportunitydonate
bloodmorethanthreetimesayear,raisemoneyforPenniesforPatientseach
year,andmore.
Respectful
Allstudentsshouldberespectfultootherstudentsandteachers,justlike
teachersarealsorespectfultoeveryone.Respectalsoincludesschool
property.BACShaschromebooksandcomputersandstudentsshouldbe
respectful,takingcareofthemandalloftheschoolproperty.
SelfAdvocacy
Selfadvocacyisbeingthedirectorofonesownlifedemonstratingagencyto
becomeempowered.Thismeansthatstudentsknowhowtotakecontrol,and

Teachers
Teachersintheschoolarenotonlytheretoteachstudents,butsupportthemin
anyproblemsstudentsmighthave.Almosteveryteacherintheschoolisan
advisorandhelpstheiradvisorythroughouttheirfouryearsofhighschool.
Teachersdon'tonlyhelptheiradvisory,butstudentsfromthewholeschool.
Therehavebeencaseswhereastudentshousehasburneddown,andthe
wholeschool,includingteachers,donatedtothefamily.Teachersarethe
studentsfriends.
Upstanderness
Upstandernessisdemonstratingactivecompassion,evenwhenafraidorin
frontofacrowd.Itcanhelpstudentsstandupforwhattheybelievein,giving
themmoreconfidence.Hopefully,fortheshypeople,upstandernessduring
presentationscanhelpthembreakthroughthatshellofshynessthey'rein.It
givesthemconfidencetokeeppresenting.
Vacation
Therearestudentsthatgoonvacationwiththeirfamiliesthroughouttheschool
year,anditistheirresponsibilitytotalktoteachersaheadoftime.Parents
shouldtalktoKyleenorCarolynandthestudentshouldmeetwiththeteachers
togetassignmentstheywouldbemissing.Notdoingsocouldpotentiallylead
tothestudenttofailingaclass.
Wellness
Wellnessisnotonlyaboutphysicalhealth,itisalsoaboutemotionalhealth.
Nutritionwise,Blackstonehasavendingmachinefilledwithhealthysnacks
anddrinksforstudentsandteachers,andtheschoollunchalsoincludesfruit
andvegetableseverydaytopromotehealthtothestudents.Emotionally,
counselorslikeBethandGilarealwaystheretolistentostudentsandgive
themadvice.

ExhibitionNight
ExhibitionNightiswhenstudentshavetheopportunitytoteachateacherand
twoguestjudgesaboutaprojecttheyhadinterestin.Itdoescountasatest
gradeintheclassoftheproject,soitencouragesstudentstotrytheirbest
whilepresenting.Studentspresentonceayear,eitherinthemiddleoftheyear
ortowardstheendoftheyear.

Allinall,theBACSexperiencedependsonyou.Howyouact,try,andhow
muchyoucommitintoworkingalldependsonyou.Ifyoudodecidetonotdo
workandstoptrying,youwonthavethebestexperienceyoucouldvehadat
BlackstoneAcademy.Thatswhyyouractionsdependonhowyourhighschool
lifewillbe.

Z. Zest
AnotherHOM,zest,isshowingenthusiasmandenergy.Studentsthatcometo
schoolwithenergyshowzestbecauseitshowstheyarentjusttherebecause
theyhaveto,butbecausetheywanttobe.Itmakesthelearningexperiencefor
themmorefun,whichisalwaysgood.
