Simulation of RCCI Engine

Parth Jaggi
Nekkanti Akhil
Under the Guidance of
Dr Rakesh Kumar Maurya

Validation of Simulated Data

The simulations were run using experimental parameters from

PhD thesis of Atul Dhar.

Data obtained was found within close tolerances.

Experimental Parameters

The result obtained from simulation had close resemblance

with the experimental data.
Further simulations keeping the all the parameters constant
except Injection timing and the injected quantity were run.
Parameter

Bore

85 mm

Stroke

90 mm

Connecting Rod length

138 mm

Compression Ratio

17.5

Injection Pressure

500 bar

Engine Speed

Main Injection Variation

The Main Injection timing was varied for a wide range of values.
The value of Main Injection for which the Efficiency was highest
was chosen for further analysis.
The efficiency was found to be maximum for the case when
injection starts at -5 CAD.

Pilot Injection

Pilot Injection was used to enhance mixing and decrease the Rate
of Pressure Rise for Diesel Engines. With the use of CRDi systems,
this was possible.
Lower Rate of Pressure Rise is in direct correlation with the
Combustion noise generated.
The efficiency in the case of pilot injection was almost found to be
same as shown in the graph below.

Pilot Injection

The pressure curves obtained for different pilot injection are as

PCCI

Premixed Charge Compression Ignition

The basic difference between Diesel and PCCI is that whole fuel is
injected prior to the start of combustion in PCCI but in Diesel fuel
is injected also once combustion starts.

Efficiency vs Injection Timing

With change in SOI there was very slight change in efficiency.

NOx vs Injection Timing

However there was a large change in NOx with change in SOI.

EGR

EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation.

In EGR a portion of an engine'sexhaust gas was recirculated back
to the enginecylinders.
Where some fraction of the fuel added in the next cycle composed
of the exhaust gases.
this helps in reducing the NOx emissions and increasing the
Efficiency.
