The 1922 March on Rome was to establish
Mussolini and the Fascist Party he led, as the
most important political party in Italy. In
November 1921, the fascist parties of Italy joined
forces to create the Fascist Party. It became an
official political party. In its October 1922 party
conference, Mussolini said: Either the

by marching on Rome.

Mussolini, with the partys hierarchy, drew up a
blueprint on how to do this. Fascists would be
brought into Rome from all over Italy. Allimportant public buildings would be taken over
including those outside of Rome in the important
cities in the north. Mussolini would demand the
resignation of the government and that a new
Fascist government be allowed to take over.
Armed Fascists would be near Rome. If the
government failed to meet these demands, they
would march into Rome and take over by the use
of force.
The plan was grandiose if nave. The military in

The Battle for Land: This 'battle' was to clear
marshland and make it useable for farming and

the Pontine Marshes - an area of mosquitoinfested bog land that was to have housing built

Mussolini was able to maintain Italy by advancing the economy and maintaining the control of the society. Italy
was not making any progress to improve their nation. Italy was a poor nation.[and] Mussolini wanted to
advance the [economy](Trueman,9). Mussolini then realized this and made a plan to attack the trade unions to
control some workers to help Italy. While helping Italy, he made three battles in order to increase their hopes. The
three battles were called the Battle of Land which was believed to become a success then the Battle of Lira, and
finally, Battle of Grain. The Battle of Land was to make the marshland into an agricultural field for the people to be
employed with purpose for the economy.

APPROVED The Battle of the Lira: This 'battle'

was to restore some of the purchasing power the
lira had in bygone days. Mussolini believed that a
weak lira looked bad for Italy when he was trying
to create the image of a super power in Europe.
A powerful nation could not have a weak national
currency. Mussolini inflated the value of the lira
making exports more expensive. This created
unemployment at home as many industries and
firms could not sell their goods. This particular
battle proved a failure primarily as the economic
base of Italy was too small. She was not an
industrial nation but in essence an agricultural
one. Basing the strength of your economy on
agriculture rarely works and this was the case in
Italy. However, Italy got through the Depression
in the 1930'a better than Europe's industrial
power houses simply because she was an
agricultural nation. The Depression hit the
industrial nations of Europe very hard.
The Battle for Grain: Mussolini wanted to make
Italy economically stronger and near enough selfsufficient. Hence his desire to grow grain.
However, the plan was to grow grain at the
expense of fruit and vegetables which were
cheaper to produce. Italian grain became
expensive at home and the price of bread rose.
This hit the poor the worst as bread was a major
part of their diet. Rich farmers did well out of this
as they were guaranteed a good price for what
they produced.
In terms of economic growth, Italy did not have
the expanse of industry to bolster her farming
based economy. Whereas Germany had its
industrial power-house in the Ruhr and Britain
had South Wales, the North-East, Midlands and
North-West, Italy had relatively few of these
industrial zones. Though laudable in theory,
Mussolini's plans for Italy's economic growth
were based on weaknesses he could not
overcome.

APPROVED In order for Mussolini to increase his

support alongside the support from political
parties it was exceptionally crucial for him to gain
the support of the most popular institution in Italy,
the Roman Catholic Church. Due to its large
reputation and popularity amongst the people of
Italy, Mussolini had merely used the institution for
his own purposes, his relationship with the
Roman Catholic Church was later described as a
Marriage of Convenience as it was a merely a
tactic which he used to help him boost Fascist
support and more importantly, his own support.
He managed to gain the support of the Catholic
Church by mainly changing his personal
behaviour and portraying himself as a good
Catholic. In 1926 Mussolini renewed his vows in
a Catholic Church to his wife and christened his
children in 1923. This had gained him publicity
and portrayed a positive Catholic image of him in
front of the public therefore gaining support.
Politically however, Mussolini had agreed to give
the Church what it wished. Mussolini had
introduced therefore, a decree which had made
the teaching of religion compulsory in schools
and the introduction of the Lateran Treaties. In
the Lateran Treaties Mussolini handed over 110
acres of land to the Catholic Church to form their
own city, known as the Vatican City, in which the
church was able to create its own laws and run
that small state by itself. The church had been
exceptionally proud and was fully supportive of
Mussolini.
